gear knob

How do you get the gearknob off a cup do you need to saw it off or can it just be pulled off.

i just clamped a set of molegrips on mine and gave it a couple of pulls and twists and off the bad boy came!

Do you reccomend pulling off the bad boy with one big tug, or several smaller tugs?
