Gearbox advice needed please! :(

Hiya i was i wonder if theres anyone On here that knows abit about the mk2 172 gearbox or more importantly the diff!! Iv recently started to get a high pitch whistle almost which im more than certain is the diff bearings. I havent looked properly yet but seem to remember there being what looked like a diff cover on the box and its made me wonder if you can get the diff out and replace the bearings leaveing the gearbox in place!? Can anybody help?

No you can't get the diff out with the box in.
