Gearbox / clutch failure?

  H22A7 Accord Type R
I am posting this on behalf of my mate. His 206 1.4 is on about 88K now.....and he has the following problem.........

Alright guys and dolls, hope everyone had a good Christmas

Need some opinions of a mechanical nature if you would

The Pug started playing up on Friday, whenever I was steering left it was drifting to the right and vice versa, also when setting off or when in a corner with a bit of power on, 1 of the front wheels seemed to be wheel spinning.
My first thought was driveshaft on 1 side, as the holidays were starting garages open on Saturday were fairly limited so I ended up taking it to Nationwide Auto Centre on the back of Halfords in Huddersfield.
They called me later to tell me that they had been unable to even get the Pug into the garage and had to push it in as the gearbox was knackered, I was therefore going to need a new gearbox and clutch which would cost me the best part of a grand!!!
Prior to this I'd had no problems with getting the car in gear or with the clutch, felt as good as it did when the car was new.
Personally I can not understand how the gearbox would be responsible for the car drifting or lack of power to 1 wheel but I am not as mechanically experienced as some of you will be.
Any ideas or are the garage just trying to rip me off??

Cheers
Damo

** Can any of you guys shine any light on this for him? he doesnt have the forum use / contacts that i have so i thought i would post up in here for some help! I think £1k is a big silly personally, even a whole box from a scrappers wouldnt be that bad. Yea, im SURE the clutch will need doing as its 88k of town miles etc etc and it gets some use. But surely even the box could be refurb'd........as the gears all worked fine.

Any help appreciated :)

not sure on if it could be the cause, though I would imagine it's possible it could be. Sound like a hell of a lot of money though and I would definately be taking it elsewhere, also I would be going down to check over that the car won't drive as it sounds a bit suspicious when it was driving fine when you took it down to them.

its not worth spending £1k on, 51 plate 206 with that many miles, its well past its best now! ive said to him to get it to another garage....... get it recovered ;)

Sounds like the differential has broken.

Gearbox and clutch can be gone for a lot less its 3.5 hours so so to chn age the gearbox say another half hour for clutch.

Ring a breakers yard you'll pick up a box cheap (£250 or so I'd guess) most small Pugs use the same type box I belive so most will fit. Idealy use the same engine sized one. There a Haynes manual for the car if he fancies DIY.

he does have the haynes.......but, i doubt he would go that far lol! ;)
Yea good point edde, the diff! ive said to him to look at other garages, but its up to him if he decides to go for it or not.....you can only help people so much! Breakers yard sounds like the best idea, along with a new clutch.

Ive posted on CT, ive got the box out of my VTR at work, it fits a 1.4 Furio, which is the same engine as in the 1.4 206, so i think it'll probably fit!

It wouldnt get reverse which is why i swopped it, but ive fixed that now, excellent workmanship at Perrys in Hudds was the cause :(
