Gearbox disassembly

  2003 Clio 172
Hey,

Has anyone here split the gearbox apart themselves at all?

Any guides or pointers?

Got a replacement for mine, its a speedo drive model but thats no problem

I just want to give it an overhaul myself

I did this on my civic, replaced all of the bearings and left all of the gears/shafts etc intact. I didnt want to start splitting all that stuff.

Started into it yesterday and realised that what looks like 5th or so gears (under the metal cover) would need to come off before the box will split, which is a bit of a problem as i started to split the box without doing that.

So as you can imagine, it needs to come apart now to at least be reasealed.

Would appreciate some tips on doing this (if possible) without the 98,000 tools that Renault no doubt recommend.

Cheers
Andy

you need to join the box back together, remove the 5th gear selector so that you can put it in 2 gears. Then undo the big nuts on the end of 5th. If you want to pull the diff out now is a good time to loosen the big nut under the offside shaft seal.
5th gear is stuck onto the end of the 172 box, so you will need a puller to remove it - take care, the gears are brittle.
Once the gears are off the end it should all come apart.
They are a real bugger to get back together and get all the detents etc right.

It's a few years since I had one apart, so take all that with a pinch of salt :)

Please tell me "detents" is just a typo and not something i have never heard of and dont understand/am not liklely to get right.....

Ahhh...

Detent
To resist movement (or when creating incremental steps), methods are employed which include a spring-loaded ball bearing that locates in small incremental depressions, or a piece of spring steel that snaps into position on flat surfaces or shallow notches milled into the shaft or wheel.

Well, sounds like a ball ached of a job so ill just ghetto the case back together.

Its splits enough to let me clean the existing seal and apply new stuff

So, whats the best stuff to seal the box with?

I gather its just a bead around the outside of the box and there is no funky sealing inside?

Coolio,

Ordered, will try and give the surfaces a wee clean tonight ready for the sealant.
