gearbox ; gears with "straight" teeth ??

  RS RIP
maybe not making sense  bare with me + my English..

The gearbox has slanted teeth gears does'nt it ? I know the race boxes often have straight ones ?

The slanted ones transfer a lot of power outwards putting stress on the box/ pushing outwards and splitting the damn thing. Is it possible to somehow use different gears with the straight teeth ? Advantage being no more blown gearboxes ?

Or are we talking very big $$ , or impossible system because of clutch-etc. box design ?

iirc the reverse gears use stright cut as the noise issue is not that important but you couldt drive with that noise all the time. but yeh straight cut gears are more reliable.

so that is the wining noise in all those cup racer/ rallye from inside cockpit films !

Yes i'm guessing that would become very irritating+unbearable !

But ! Is this do-able in costs and are the same gears deliverable , meaning a straight switch over for the helical ones ?

I think this would take away a lot of problems when turbo-ing / supercharging the car using the not so reliable oem box

Straight cut gear 'sets' (not the box, just the shafts with gears) can be bought but are mega expensive. Your car will sound like a race car from inside. The reason gears are helical (sp?) is that they make almost no noise at all. Straight cut gears are very noisy, they whine (as with the interior videos of touring cars).
iirc your talking a few thousand pounds for a straight cut gear set. Quaiffe make some semi-straight sets for some gearboxes (like the VW 02J - 5 speed golf). They are about £1250 iirc.

yeah i would think the prices were like that. But it IS a way to supercharge the Clio to 300+ and not worry anymore about the box

not for me anyway.. was just wondering if anyone had thought of also modifying a box to take silly HP

Its sudden increases in torque/power that'll kill the box. Superchargers 'should' be ok with the standard box as the torque/power increase is much more controlled. But i may be talking rubbish!
