Gearbox oil change?

I have a 19000mile 182 which will be going in for an early 24k service in the next couple of weeks.

Is the standard gearbox oil, put in the box at manufacture, as good as you can get or is there better stuff available.

I am thinking of getting it changed but only if a better quality oil can be used as it obviously doesnt "need" changing due to age or mileage.

What are peoples opinions on changing the oil. Would the box benefit from an oil change more often then what Renault recommends. What mileage/time does Renault recommend for a gearbox oil change?

  Oyster Card
Castrol gearbox oil is good, not wallet friendly though.
Mine likes to piss gearbox oil so none of my gearbox oil ever has the chance to get old ;)

i was told when i had my box built to change the oil every 12k miles. it doesnt brake down like normal oil as its not subject to the kind of heat that you find in an engine.
anyways i use millers comp fully synth 75w/90 was told by gearbox builders this is the best.

every 12000 miles is the same as the engine oil.

I think I will get it done and see if I can feel the difference.

I assume any of the top branded stuff fully synthetic 75W/90 will do the job?

I will get it done at GDI, I think Andy uses Silkolene, must remember to phone him up.

thanks for info jon^^

Yes its about 180lb/ft, ish;).

Thats why I want to make sure I keep up with the maintenance with shorter service intervals. I would prefer to pay for a gearbox oil change then a new gearbox.

Silkolene box oil tends to feel crap after a short time.

Redline, torco or Royal purple if you want proper heavy duty stuff that will last.

  GDI Demo 182, Rsi Spider
personally i like the silkoline gear oil, royal purple is very good.... but MEGA expensive.

i have been using a good branded 75-90 semi gear oil for about 8 yrs now and NEVER had one problem with the stuff, even on tuned cars.

can any one tell me how to change the gear box oil on a mk1 any guides would be great wth pics
cheers
The drain plugs under the gearbox 8mm square nut.
To refill the nut is down the front of the engine facing forwards to the radiator.
Its a pain to get to you need a pipe sort of to get the new fluid into the box.

refil on the plastic wingned nut.

GO to halford and buy one of their orange funnels with flexi pipe attatched, that fits perfectly.
