Gearbox on the 200

Just looking for a little opinion and input on this...

Missus is looking at a Clio 200 (PH III) but I hear they've had all sorts of problems related to the gearbox as they came out of the factory.

What's the situation on this - do Renault sort this out for you if you take it to them or is it a case of you're stuffed and looking a fat bill if anything goes wrong?

I guess the solution is find one to buy that's already been refurbed but asking the question all the same, thanks.

The replaced ones can still fail.

It seems a bit of a gamble because there are some that fail straight away, and some (like mine) that are spot on.

I've just sold my 200 (60 plate), was on 33,500 and the box was notchy at pace, and sometimes wouldn't select 1st at all, not sure if the box was on the way out or not but i didn't have a lot of confidence in it.

I thought it was more of a general lottery...abused ones can be fine and equally, gently treated ones can fail without notice.

On my 200 which I ran from 18k to 42k miles I always rev-matched and focussed on being smooth and treated it with sympathy. Having done that I still had no confidence in the 'box.

To the OP, it's a risk for sure. Renault have a history of being inconsistent with claims either within or beyond warranty. Some get 100% contribution 6 months out of warranty, some get just a 10% contribution 12 months within warranty.

Both of my 200s were fine. Both covered roughly 30k each. It's a total lottery! Like Mark said it has no reference to the way you drive!

hi take someone with you when you buy the car who can check it over, then get the gearbox oil changed asap, you will need 2 litres fuchs or motul. I get mine from opie oils on here, delivered next day. :S

I bought a 60 plate 200 with 69k miles on it, it had a new box just before I bought it.

If you have a box problem, you may be lucky and get Renault to knock some money off the job, but tbh, you're better off paying one of the specialists on here to fit you a new box as it'll be a better quality job and probably cheaper.

My wife has a 197 with 50k and the box is fine.

If you buy a 197/200 check the bottom swivels as they can be expensive to replace.
