Gearbox removal?

Hi everyone,

We have a problem with my girlfriends clio.

I believe a bearing has gone in the gearbox, I've checked all the obvious and am now sure its coming from the diff area, and have two questions.

1. Where is the filler for the gearbox oil? And how do I check the ammount?

2. I've got a secondhand box to put in, although I'll be doing the swap in the garage without a lift, can the box be unbolted from the engine and brought out the top? Or is it a sub frame off and drop it out the bottom job? Or is it an engine out job to remove from the top? I'd rather pluck it out with the crane from the top as I dont want to be on my back to much!

Thanks in advance, the car in question is a 1.2 1998, I belive mk1 phase2. Non power steering or airbag

Regards, Steve

you mean mk2ph1 the pre facelift shape?? I take it D7F engine. From what I can remember you can unbolt the gearbox on that engine with taking too much apart. On the front of the gearbox there should be a butterfly screw thats where you fill the oil up until it trickles out.

Cheers Dave, Managed to drop it out the bottom. Very tight though!

Had to lift the engine about 10 inches to get enough room to drop it out!

Easier to whip off the sub frame I suppose, but it looked very rusty and seized!

Empty Space!

I snapped one of the fuel pipe clips, there is a red and green one, dont suppose you know where I can get a new on? Main dealer?

Ahh, happy memories of working on the D7F. Try a scrap yard, they are full of Clios with this engine.

Look at all the space in that engine bay! I wish my engine bay had that much space to work in!
