Gearbox Whine in 1st and 2nd

  Mazda3 2.2D 185BHP
Hey

My Box is whining when in 1st and 2nd gear, Its not loud, but if you turn the music off and listen its there.

Is it anything to worry about?

I'm going to book it in for a service in about 4 weeks, would it be a good idea to ask them to drain and renew the gearbox oil?

Change/ top up gear oil with correct grade i prefer to use elf NFJ.

If its still there after either carry on or get it rebuilt

Not particularly. But I'm. Willing to pamper it :)
Once this and the exhaust is sorted in should be great a :)

Agency transmission will do it for around £350

You just need to send them the box and they send it back once it is done

eh?? I won't be that much i only just had mine done and it was shot. Grinding and crunching every rotaion, was pretty bad and only cost me £285.

As above you need to get the box out and sent to them. Then dpn't forget additional costs of gear oil, clutch and coolant. Soon mounts up.

I was quoting with new fluid and installing a reinforced Circlip

Well... I will only take it somewhere where they will remove it then refurb it and then refit it.

Sounds like this will be expensive... Great more things to add to the list of repairs.

This is what it cost me doing it myself.

Refurb £285
Clutch £93
Coolant £12
Gear oil £38
New shaft ( which i needed) £112
Labour 10ish hours £0

Fat total of £540 and that was without labour due to me doing it.

Yep it will cost as much as the car is worth to get a box recon and new clutch done on it.

Just check the fluid level (or better still change it) and drive it and hope it lasts!

They arent worth enough to justify much preventative maintenance when its that expensive.

Dependant on where you go.

Whatever way you look at it, even if my some miracle you could find someone to remove, PROPERLY rebuild and refit the box with a new clutch for say 600 quid, its still not worth it while its working given how low the value of the car is, and I personally dont know anywhere that would do a proper job for that money.

DIY it, or just hope it lasts!

This is very annoying. Only had the car a month and have spent over a grand on repairs all ready.
half of me is hopeing the dealer who sold it to me doesnt pay their contribution to the last repair so i can sue them for the entire amount and then get the gearbox done.

It'll come with a warranty of some sort if it was sold by a dealer, they should fix it no?

Get some breakdown and wait for it to die. My mum moaned of her clutch slipping in her TDCI focus (DMF) at 120,000. I said drive it more carefully ie don't demand loads of grunt from it as she has no money and I have no time for a job that big at the moment. That was 10,000 miles ago. Still motoring along. Picked a bumper up from Plymouth for me (i'm in Bristol) the other week in the focus and it's still running fine.

Just drive it and start saving. You just never know with cars. It always amazes me how long some engines last on YouTube with no fluids in.

No no Chip when i say dependant on where you go i was on about getting the box out lol.

Buy cheap buy twice on the refurb side of things.

Yea, But this whole situation with them has been stupid. We came to an agreement over the last repairs (yet they still not paid lol)

Anyway, Popped to my local garage on way home, asked him to jump in and have a listen.

He said its only a slight whine, and not a grinding type whine that would indicate impending death. Just sounds like 1st and 2nd have been abused.
Said there should be a good 30k+ left in it if driven nicely with the odd rush now and again.
So i will leave the gearbox well alone :)
BUT i will renew its oil at the weekend.

Sounds like decent advice to me, just use the thing, no point obsessing over trying to make a decade old car perfect unless you really want an expensive hobby that will yield no return, lol.
