Gearknob Removal / Refitting

I've bought a new standard gearknob from renault as my own 1 is chipped and the top silver part with the gears, e.g. R 1 3 5 etc. is peeled and scratched to fook so I need to know how to properly remove the old 1 and refit the new 1 without damaging anything (bar the old knob as thats getting binned anyway as its buggered)
