Gearstick feels like it's in 5th when it's in 3rd?

Hey.

Got my Clio 182 yesterday and noticed when driving that when in 3rd gear it kind of looks like it's in 5th as it's at an angle and not in the normal middle and up position.

Is this normal? Or a common fault with something thats come out of alignment or something?

Thanks a lot, Dan

It might be just because i'm used to a vag gear box, but to me 3rd would normally be up inline with where the "fans pointing to feet" symbol is. Anyone else able to check what theirs is like for me please?

I think there was a clamp on the linkage on mine a few inches back from where the gearcchange linkage connects to the gearbox linkage which may allow some rotation to change the sideways position of the stick if someone has had it apart and moved it but I haven't investigated this myself and I have an early type linkage and I'm not entirely sure of all the differences. Should be visible at the back of the engine undertray. The gear stick is free to float around when disconnected so there must be some adjustment available.

Under the car you need to twist the linkage directly under the gear stick.
dont touch the gearbox end as there is no adjustment.
only move it a tiny bit though as they can be a pain to realign.

Pretty sure its a 13mm bolt. The fitment is very basic but muddle it up and you will have no gears or loose some etc.
nothing which can't be put right but its fiddly to keep climbing from under the car back into the drivers seat so have someone sit in the car whilst you adjust it.
don't move the rod in or out as that adjustment sounds ok, just rotate it a few degrees.

I've done loads on the older renaults.

Mines the same as yours, even after a box change and lots of linkage adjusting. Think its just how it is. Or I'm unlucky lol

Easy to adjust,

Put the car in third,

Have someone hold the gearstick,

Go underneath. Loosen 13mm nut on the linkage.

Have person move the stick more centrally.

Tighten but.

Done.
