You won't have to pull the gear knob of, jaysus! The gaitor will undoubtedly be cable tided on the inside, making it tighter. When looser it should slip over the knob.

You need to unclip the gaitor at the bottom, then turn it inside out on itself, you should see a cable tie.

The new one does not have a cable tie...

I've fitted loads of these and have never had to remove the gearknob.

Cut the cable tie off the old one and lift over the gearknob, the new one should be able to slip over the gearknob, then fit a new cable tie, once you have it positioned straight, pull the tie tight and cut the long part of the cable tie and secure the bottom of it to the centre console.....Jobs a good un!

Well my gearknob is a teardrop shape and the current one will not pop off either, I have unclipped it to check and I can see the cable tie but the leather is in a cone shape with about a 30mm diameter at the top.

Fitted loads to MK3s too (used to be a renault tech).

No offence to the OP but its a simple job,if you don't know what your doing, get someone to do it for you!

I'll try cutting the cable tie and wedging it over but really dont think it will.
Man up? I can use my gender as an excuse and get away with things... (most of the time)

Just like fitting a condom really. Just stretch it over the knob.
Ha. finally done it!
Its held on the top with an elasticated band and stapled to the base!
But to get the new one on I had to rip it so may re-do the centre stiching with a stretchy thred so it pops over like a glove with no tears! :)
