what's people thoughts on using non genuine parts

the main things i'm looking at using non genuine parts for

cambelt(gates kit)
water pump
thermostat
various gaskets

i know they are cheaper, but is it a false saving because i'll have to buy them again sooner

IIRC the genuine Cambelt is a gates one
I have no idea about water pump
No problem using a non gen thermostat
Non gen gaskets should be ok depending on what there for?

pattern part quality varies. some are as good if not better than genuine, and some are made of cheese. You just have to pick and choose. I mostly know what pattern parts I'll use and what i wont

gates cambelt kit
Renault water pump
First line thermostat

Gaskets, on an F4R, Victor Reinz gaskets for anything, but Renault are slightly cheaper so genuine

Quiton Chantelle ain't bad, all the non genuine boys buy off each other anyway (and the manufactures buy from them!)

as above. It's all about finding out what's made by who and where it's cheaper in a different box

if only there was a list of this kind of info.

also where can "First line thermostat" be bought from andrew pages, gsf, eurocarparts ?

i thought that with them, just heard story of them jamming shut but i surpose that could happen to any.

also couldn't the same be said for the water pump seeing as its just a pulley connected to an impeller.

water pumps are funny. i've had all kinds go wrong, plastic impellars shearing (just say no to plastic!!!), bearings seizing, and a housing shattered and sent a viscous fan through a rad

i think i'll get the gen one for the sake of messing around. just have to work a few more hours to pay for it.

sometimes the old addage of, "if it aint broke, dont fix it" really does apply. I'm yet to see an F4R actually NEED a water pump changed. They must fail sometimes, but i've not seen it happen
