Going to look at 1997 clio 1.4 rt

  PH1 iceburg
Right guys and gals,

Going to look at the above little car tomorrow. Looks and sounds like quite a find so hope it all checks out.

I know a few of you on here have or have had mk1's so i was just wondering what to look out for other than the usual rotten arches and cambelt etc.

Cheers mofo's

1997, that'll be a phase 3 mk1 I expect. They don't seem to suffer the dreaded tin worm that bad tbh.

1)Check the bonnet still has its cable attatched as its annoying more than anything.
2)If its got a sunroof check it for leaks on the sunroof itself and the ariel base. Both notorious for leaking. (drive to a petrol station, use the water machine all over the roof)
3)check the steering wheel has no play in it as its an MOT failure and a pain to sort. sit in the car with keys in ignition but no engine on and wiggle the steering wheel. You'll feel it if its got too much play.
4)if its got remote central locking, check it works. Most dont but its a good haggling point.
5) check inner and outer sills and arches for rust and/or signs of a poor repair.
But being a phase 3 it shouldn't be that bad. My ph3 has done twice the mileage of my ph2 and theres no rot on it at all. The ph2 is loaded with it.

Apart from that, just do the usual used car checks.

Used to have a 1997 (P reg) Clio S Maxim (same engine as 1.4 rt) had it up to 125,000 with no problems really

only thing i can think of is that mine broke two clutch cables in just over a year (easy to replace though for about £17)

leaking ariel is easy fix (bathroom sealant around the base)

and also the remote central locking only caused me problems untill i plugged the ariel leak

was a lovely car, me and my gf owned it for 4 years between us and we wish we still had it
