As stated, first ask on avforums, give an idea of budget, placment, room soze and shape, listening material etc - as you want to pair the components carefully - e.g I partnered my Quad Speakers (traditionally bright, technically excellent, with an Arcam amp with a more laid back sound to reign the harshness in,
The classified section on there is worth a look, you can grab some real bargains if you know what your looking for :)

3 other websites worth a look and that i've used in the past are :

www.petertyson.co.uk, www.hifibitz.co.uk and www.avland.co.uk

With budget setups you always get a serious mix of opinions - with hifi 'ethusiasts' claiming that Richer Sounds and, indeed, Cambridge Audio / Gale are cheap crap.

But, they're great value kit which will do the job for your budget very, very well.

Find your nearest Richer Sounds store and pop in. If you're lucky they'll have a listening room so you can compare different bits of kit.

i have got a Phillips home cinema system which was not bad but the sub was a bit something and nothing! So i bought an active subwoofer from richer sounds last week and it has greatly improved the output from the system as a whole imo! and it all cost me under £250 :)

Sevenoaks.

My dad just purchased his new pair of floor standers, DAC and AMP... however, it cost a fair bit more than £400.

Tell me about it, my hifi setup came to just under £2000 :(.

How about something like :

+

Comes in about on budget, plus if you contact superfi you will be able to arrange a listening / demo session prior to purchase :)

He so far has a Cyrus 8vs2, Monitor Audio RS6's and a Cambridge Azure DAC... no CD Player yet... however you do the maths ;p

Sweet setup there and a fair bit of dough too - love Cyrus stuff, so detailed and accurate :).

Mines Arcam AVR 280 amp, Quad 11L2 Fronts, Quad L-ite rears, KEF PSW2010 Subwoofer, Atacama Stands and QED Silver Anniversary XT biwire cable (£200 alone!).

Atm theres a ghost centre, but i'll be adding a Quad L2 centre in the future, while my trusty PS3 performs all my Blu-ray / DVD / CD duties, but again i'll be adding a CD player in the near future, possible a Marantz.

what about something like this?

seems to have decent reviews from what hifi and is aesthetically ok

Some NAD equipment can sound a tad unrefined but coupled with the 1020is i'm sure you will be pleased, I demoed the 1010is not long ago and for the price they are a pleasent suprise.

On a side note, your going to need to buy an Ipod dock to go with that - the official Apple Ipod dock now comes with remote control and is uner £30, which is a bargain tbh :

Ebay. Some awesome deals can be had on there for speakers and amps.

personally i'd get an amp and speakers and then just use an aux in for the ipod.

As you said, Richer Sounds are good (they have a shop here in Norwich). Only ever heard good things about them.

right i think i am a bit nearer a decision, sort of

looking at the cambridge audio azur 540R V3 av reciever to power a full surround setup for both music and movies, not decided on what speakers to go for as yet though

then i will add a cambridge audio azur cd player (or i could just use my ps3?)

this way i THINK i am right in saying i won't need another 2 channel amp? unless i wanted to?

i may end up going slightly over budget, mut meh ;)

no you wont need another amp id really suggest buying the cambride magicdac though for the ps3 its supposedly fantastic

cheers for your help mcbunny :)

all my digital music is currently stored on a house pc in another room though, so until i rig up my own pc its not much use (unless a run an uber cable between the 2?)

and the rest of my collection is on CD (some vinyl but my other stereo takes care of that)

so i would need to couple the dacmagic with a cd player or convert all my cd's onto a pc (either the house one or buy my own) or will the dacmagic just read it straight from an external HDD?)

i am reaching the limits of my knowledge here lol (i bought what hi fi mag at the weekend and absorbed it all!! lol)
