Are the cheap ebay £5er "octopus" and "gorilla pod style" things any good? Like atall? Dont fancy paying for a genuine one if the ebay special things will do the trick?

I was in the same boat as you. Got a cheapo ebay gorilla pod around a year ago. Works perfectly for me with my dslr and a moderately sized lens so i was chuffed with it compared to the pricey name brand ones

If I get a years worth of use out of it I think itll be a bargain. is it sturdy and well built enough not to fall off whatever its wrapped round then?

Wrapped around a something odd shaped mine will hold. Something smooth like a lampost would probably cause problems. I use it mainly as a small tripod to sit on top of surfaces at different angles. Cant go wrong for that price though..
