Lol, seen it many times mate.

Do you spend most of your life on dual carriageways andyman?

Why did you buy a clio? :clown:

To get the best or to make the difference vs modded out of this driver tuition he would have to be somewhere near the limit or certainly over the speed limits.

Anyone can point and squirt up to a point. Its behond that that sorts the men from the boys, the inexperience vs the experienced.

The point im trying to make is its pretty rare to be in a position to out handle, outbrake, outwit etc someone on the UK road system, A roads, B roads etc etc aka be faster

Fine if your on a track, but everyday driving half the time he'd never be in a position to take full advantage out of it vs having extra bhp

Extra grand worth of mods on what he already has would pull on a OE 172. By how much? How longs a piece of string ...

You have just proved our point...

If you cant use a standard 172 to its full potential on UK roads, then whats the point in spending £1000 on engine modifications for an extra 20hp??

I did not think my thread would cause this massive discussion. I love my Clio, I don't want to do track days, I drive over the speed limits I admit that but only when I know my road and when its safe. Everyone who has a Clio sport races and shows off. I just have a spare grand I want the extra power in my engine. Then if its necessary I will then go for the suspension. Thanks for all your advise its been very useful! I have decided to get Cams/Remap for now. Hopefully it will give me something I want.

Power is nothing without control. Thats where all the Golf owners go wrong, They map their engines to silly power, And end up wit ha 2250bhp blamonge!

Brakes + Tyres + Suspension before any power modifications.

Getting power from your 172/182 engine is like getting blood out of a stone, So stick to the handling aspect of things and you will more than make up for the power.

Also if you are serious, Strip it out and buy some light weight seats. OR even just strip it out, Doesnt cost anything other than time.

IF you are after a car for racing off the lights, Sell up and buy a 4wd car.

The clio sport isnt about off the lights straight line performance, Give it some tight B Roads and it will come into its element. You will see off much more exotic, more expensive vehicles in this environment. If it was me, I'd start by focusing on the cars strenghth, Rather than trying to adapt it into a straight line racer.

In the twisties, Speed/power isnt going to be as beneficial as a sorted chassis, And regardless of what people are saying, Tuition IS going to benefit you, Wether you are at a track day or a on the roads (not that I condone racing on public roads).

I do not own a cliosport, But there are some really good helpful people on here who can advise you on Tyres + Suspension set ups. They will have had the same sort of mentality mention in my post, And focused on improving what is already a good chassis for this sort of environment :)

However, IMO its good enough standard, USe your £1000 for track days or put it towards insurance for next year? Go on holiday, Drink drugs and a hooker?

Ha Ha.. My insureance is cheap now i am 22. got it for £560 fully comp at the moment. Well i will take your advise on board and i will think about the track days and suspension option. Not sure what to expect with the suspension done. What would be the best features of a upgrade in that area? thanks

Stickier tyres and improved brakes.

Those two things alone will give you more (if you have even a smidgen of driving ability that is) than any engine mods, on both road and track.

Tuition is literally worth its weight in gold, and you don't need to be on the limit to be able to take an advantage.

The 'tutored' driver keeps the car more balanced and is smoother, and therefore can get on the power earlier and make every single one of their 172bhp count.

Instead of almost power-understeering into the kerb.

A couple of decades ago my advice would have been what these guys are giving you. That you could get a good performance or cornering or braking improvement, so pick the one you fancy and do it. But these days cars already brake well, handle well and have engines that are well developed. There just isn't either much real need or much benefit from spending money. And in the long run it costs you even more in increased insurance and reduced second hand value. And police have better tools for enforcement.

So these days my advice would be different. You've already got a quick car. Leave it alone. Spend your thousand pounds on a kart or something of that sort and do your "performing" on the track where you can go flat out without risking your life or your licence and its a lot more fun. Your mates will be a lot more impressed and envious if you say "I've got a kart, wanna come for a run in it" than if you say "I've got cams".

I understand your point but i have no intrest on buying a 'kart' for me i dont go bragging about my car has this and that. For me i have the money for the car. I want the best bits i can buy for £1,000. So advise on that would be better. thanks for your advise.

you wont go appreciably faster for £1000.

IMO, a stock car on bodies is the most fun, but thats way out of your budget.

just get a remap ; exhaust ; panelfilter (ITG is good) in the original filterhousing and maybe modify your airintakes for bigger ones (cheap) .

This will make your car feel a lot different, did for me anyway, will improve performance satisfactory

Exactly the 1000 pounds you're talking bout.

Save up another 800 and get H&R 's , they are the greatest suspension for the price !!
I abslolutely love them

  a green 1
tyres + brakes + suspension in that order!

have you got good tyres?

thats what ill be blowing my cash on in the new year, top set of tyres,

one of, if not the most important thing for handling........

my advice

buy forza 2 rrp £39.99

best bit of tuition you can buy spend the rest of back massages after hours of playing :)

The standard suspension is fine unless you are going racing for real, some people on here are waaay to quick to splash silly money on coilovers that are actually worse than stnd suspension on most uk roads...

yes when i changed to H&R's a couple of months ago i then noticed that the standard setup is really good too... (i could finally compare)

love the H&R s though, they're xtra good:approve:

my old 1.2 16v clio had FK Konigsport Coilovers, polly bushes, front and rear strut braces (front one welded in), fully stripped interior with no carpets or back seats etc 15" wheels with 195/45/15 eagle F1's and awesome brakes and i know for a fact that down all the twisty backroads around here once it got moving it was faster than my 172 as the speed you could carry was mental, obviously it took longer to get its speed built up and as soon as you add in a straight the 172 would pull no problem but round the bends it was quicker.

now thats a modified 83bhp car keeping with a 170bhp standard car, now give that modified car 170bhp and see just how fast it can go down a backroad!!

Spend it on whatever will make you happiest.

This threads established you dont need anything to make your car faster, so spend it on shiny bits that will make you happy/ enjoy the car that little bit more.

:)
