It's just a cut switch and you are taking it out of the circuit meaning the airbag is always off.
However, It would not be funny at all if the airbag went off, so i'd disconnect just to make sure.
Yes battery off. Should always do it really when working on the cars electrics, might not be 100% necessary all of the time but its a good habit to get into.
