grating noise when setting off

Has anyone else noticed a kind of grating noise when they pull away for the first time after starting up.

It feels like some sort of motor or pump is pulsing really quickly and can be felt through the pedals. It can also be heard and sounds like its coming from the bulkhead area somewhere. It only lasts for a second or two.

It only does it the first time I pull away after staring the engine and seems to happen when the car gets to a certain speed.

My old BMW used to do an ABS check when first setting off and Im wondering if this is what I can feel / hear.

It can be heard even more clearly if the car is rolled down hill in neutral from a fresh engine start.

Its been back to the dealer three times now and they keep saying its not doing it for them (despite my demonstrating to one of their techs).

Does anyone elses do this or am I just hyper sensitive to every little rattle and squeak on my three week old car?

Yup, mine is doing the same. Just posted a question about this. Its a new MK2, and the "scratch" happens only after a fresh start of the motor. Got it to the service, they greased the clutch related things, pedal etc but it wasnt sovled. They advised me to "wait and see if its getting worse" :)

Ill try a 2nd opinion from another service, but I havent got much time to search for it. Ill post news - hopefully good onese - here.

rust on the brakes being cleaned off.
Dont think so as it happens even if you just roll down a slope in neutral with feet off all the pedals

Scratch, that describes it perfectly, much beter than my attempt

eh? Its still rust on the brakes.

On a slope before starting the engine let it roll forward, bet it still does it.

not unless rust can form within about 10 seconds, itll do it every time you restart the engine, hot or cold, in gear or out, but not without the engine running.

Im almost certain its something in the ABS doing a test cycle but my dealer cannot confirm this (theres a surprise)

Any RTEs out there who could clear this up

mines does the same! I think it might be something to do with the clutch/cable - it seems to happen as youre releasing the clutch, almost sounds like a yawning noise from front left of the bulkhead. I do not think its the brakes - it happens once after every fresh start when you release the clutch. Started happening about six months ago.

yes, happens often to me, and on my aunts clio (w-reg sport). I have noticed that it is accompanied by a dimming of the headlights when it happens at night (ie the lights dim slightly whilst the noise occurs as if there is some motor or something running).

Also it happens exactly the same if I am braking kinda mid hard over a big dip in the road or pothole, in which case the noise lasts a bit longer than when I first move iff but its definately the smae thing you are describing, you have to be just moving before it starts!

could well be the abs.upon the startup the abs computer operates the pump and all the solenoids to carry out a self test.on some vehicles you can feel this through the brake pedal or even hear it.the abs assembly is on the n/s of the bulkhead.is the noise from that area?
