Group N Ecu

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk1
Can any 1 help, Ive decided to buy the following for my 172:
group n ecu £275 - hill power
High fuel pressure regulator £80 - hillpower
S/S zorst cat back £unknown - powerflow

Can any 1 tell me what sort of gain a can expect if any. Also what is meant by group N? Forgot to mention the car is fitted with a piperx cone filter, I know a lot of people say they lose you power, but im hoping the extra fuel will compensate this, plus the noise you get from it is too good to do without.

  Turbos.
I'm not sure why it's called Group N. I think it's just marketing spiel from the companies. IIRC i was told they are just remapped standard ECUs. The problem is they don't take into account your other mods and i think Ben R mentioned that the revs are increased which the engine isn't actually strong enough for...

Power gains will be minimal. You'll get less back pressure, so better throttle response. For most poeple that triggers the "Wow, it's faster!" feeling...

apparently the group n ecu im talking about was developed with a more free flowing exhaust and filter, all this was done by renault as well. The guy at hill power assured me that rumoures wbout the 172 being weak is a load of tosh. Even with a piper x on my car and no other mods, the engine may run a bit leaner than normal but no where near enough to do any damage to the engine.

What else could I do to the car for similar money to get a couple of horses? would putting a decat make much difference? when i did this to my previouse car, it failed the mot on emmissions even with the cat back on it?

^^^^ Chances are it wil fail with your cat back exhaust on , because you didn't actually have a cat on but a decat . Never had a decat myself but its suppose to free up a couple more bhp , plus you could get your inlet manifold ground out , quite a few people on here have had it done and say it feels more responsive . A few people do it , BenR , GDI some others i can't remember .

Quite a few people have the grp n ecu also and they say that improves the engine , plus the rev limiter is raised to 7800rpm . Add these 2 mods to your air filter and exhaust and you should be lookin at quite decent gains from what i've read on here .After that your talking big bucks for more power .

cheers for that pal, have you heard anything about these free flowing cats? will it pass mot with a free flowing cat + cat back S/S zorst? Im hoping to put the car on the rollers before any of the work is done, and then when everything is done. Should be interesting. It will also help answer a lot of rfequently asked questions on this site.

^^^^ As far as i know , its just a matter of unbolting the decat and putting your cat back on when its MOT time , then swap it back after .

My car is quicker with the group N than without. End of.

As to the revs, I don't rev my car any higher than I did before. In fact maybe even a little bit less. It's so much better lower down that you don't fell the need to thrash it everywhere. I could imagine the raised limiter is useful on track though.

I don't think there's a better mod for the money*. You get a whole replacement ECU, not just a remap so it's a cynch to return your car to standard.

*With the exception of a ported inlet fanimold maybe, but that is car specific - mine didn't make that much difference as I had on of the later RS manifolds on my 172 which wasn't that bad a match.

by the way, i dont know if any 1 knows but once an ecu is installed on 1 car, it can't be used on another (so im told)

  Vectra :(
Not all group Ns are the same. Not sure about other companies (yozza, gdi etc) but i know the N from BB Tuning has been altered to better suit the road car. The group N was originally done for the rally car and so problems exsisted with the revs etc. BBPT have spent a lot of time developing their version of the group N for road cars and not just selling the exact copy of the group N from renault. Most other companies problem sell their own versions also tho so i am not saying one is better than the other.

Hillpower certainly know their stuff, and are good to deal with, very helpful and informative.

i also have a bb grp n, deffo worth it, and i've proved its around 10mph+ faster, as i did before and after comparisons on my 'private test road'

if your handy with the spanners it doesn't take to long to do either

seeing as BB have strong links with fast chip I'd guess they were the same map.

Back in the day fastchip offered the parts for the 19/Clio 16v turbo conversion for under 2k!

Although looking on their site, 220 euros for the grp n, blimey that's cheap!

Correct ,, once the ecu is fitted to the car and pwerd up the immo box writes the codes into the ecu and it is there for ever unless removed back to self learn state.
