Gti 6 project with 306 content

I thought I would make a progress thread for my 6. I normally have motors that I'm not proud enough to document! I've had 5 306s before but never a petrol one so I thought I'd make a decent thread of it. Ive had 3 hdis and 2 dturbos. I have had numerous cars in between 306s but always end up having a 306 as a project or as an oil burner. Ive had 18 cars and Im 20 but I like Peugeots because they are easy to work with :)

My first 306 was a 5 door hdi glx spec, bought it for £200 2 years ago with a knackered engine but tax+ test. Got it remapped for 100 quid in Bradford, homemade decat and straight through exhaust made 130bhp on rollers.

I ended up doing a fair bit to this car. New engine in, leathers, gti6 suspension, black cyclones, fitted a laguna splitter and painted the masks in the front lights. Learnt a lot about cars on this one.

Sold it looking like this. (Not my pic)

2nd 306 was a Dturbo S 5 door that was owned by a family friend for years and I always wanted it, he smashed the boot in before I got it so I bought it with tax and test for next to nothing. Turned the pump up a lot! Wound it round 2 full turns :) Homemade decat and plenty of smoke meant it was a fun car.
This is when it was filled with magazines.

The constantly black boot and dent.

My 3rd 306 was a Diablo Red Meridian hdi and I don't have any pics of this. I put a spoiler on it and some cyclones and then sold for ££££, was remapped and decatted for nothing.

My 4th 306 was a Black 3 door Dturbo, I got this off a friend who had abused it so I gave it some love. Lowered it on Avo suspension off ebay £31!! Put my 205 speedlines on it, fitted full phase 1 gti6 leathers which were near mint and gave it a compound. It had the rear quarter painted before and I hated the fact it had seen paint. Sold it for what I paid for it basically. Had a lot of fun in it though because it was turned up and had a straight through exhaust system on it.

My 5th 306 was one that I had been waiting 6 months for. It was near mint (keen eyes will notice the passenger side hockey stick). HDI Dturbo, a very economical and good handling car. Ever since my first 306 I had wanted a Hdi Dturbo because my friend got a mint one for 1k and I was jealous. It made me sick though when he trashed it, crashed it and then traded it in for peanuts :( I did 2k in this one over Xmas, realised it wasnt what I expected (as usual) and sold it for profit. It was completely standard and I told everyone before I bought it that I would keep it for years, it had only covered 65k in 12 years.

Day I got it :(

The latest 306 is a Gti 6 :) I got it on good friday, which was certainly a good day (even though it doesnt run). It cost me just over scrap value, its a 1997 phase 2 has FSH 80k miles and is near mint. Only 1 10p sized dent which I am going to get sorted. Its completely standard. The reason it was so cheap was because of a minor engine issue ;)

As soon as I woke up saturday I set about seeing what was wrong with it, I was told it had no compression on cylinder 2...
Did some checks to confirm and got the head off to find this beauty.

I text the previous owner and asked if it had any trouble before as 6 engines seem to be made of cheese. He replied and said that the cambelt snapped at idle 6 years ago. A few valves were bent, they were replaced and new gasket, water pump and cambelt kit were fitted.

Now I have done a lot of reading about 6 engines and talked to a few engines builders and they recommend checking the valves on a laithe with a dti gauge because if they are 0.001 mm out they will sound tappy and eventually snap.
This car has covered 20k in the last 6 years so it hasnt really done much but I think one of the valves was ever so slightly bent and has eventually given up.

I am sending the head off tomorrow to be dipped, skimmed, 16 new valves installed and seats cut. It might need a new guide but he said it won't make any difference in price. £310 for the lot, so car stands me at ~£500, needs testing (£30) and taxing (~£120) and will be on the road!

Not a bad Gti6 for around £650 and some elbow grease

Sorry for the crap quality pics and rambling.

Cheers Marco

Not bad! Looks in a lot better nick than mine externally, considering it's the same age!

I'm sad at seeing your 4th 306 (DTurbo) on 205 wheels... it just confirms Daniels comments on mine :(

What are your comments? :)

I managed to keep them when I sold my 205 mi16, then I sold those wheels for £110 to the guy who I bought that 306 off. So I basically got the car for free. They had brand new T1Rs on so it would have been a waste taking them off just because they were Speedlines.

It has had the same owner for 14 years, I don't think it has been abused at all. I will be making sure it gets a portion when its on the road though.

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Reminds me of my Moonstone HDi Dturbo, can't believe its 6 years since I had it now!!

Am a GTI-6 and Rallye fan. Can get some bargains now...

GTI-6 engines are rock solid, if maintained properly. There are engines on the GTI-6 forum on nearly 300k that do regular track work without issue. Problem is, cambelts need doing regularly! Oh and if you rebuild the top end, it'll tap, no matter how well you build it, it'll sound like a sewing machine.

Looks like a fun little project though! Mines just gone back on the road after 3 years in storage, needed a new fuel filter due to perished seal to get through the MOT. Its now being used daily by a mate of mine and its fine.

I had this on my one . Was tapping when it got hot after the head and valvs were done .

Sounds like you're onto a winner if it's as easy to get sorted as you think!

It will still tap? I thought they only tapped because of valves that were slightly bent but un-noticatable.

Took the head to the engineering company and its getting acid dipped tonight and then rebuilt tomorrow.

Price has gone up though, head set and bolts with stem seals fitted has taken it to £430 for the rebuild. I was going to get the parts from another supplier a lot cheaper but I trust the engineering company will supply better quality parts.

I'm not that bothered about throwing money at it though because I don't want it to break when I'm thrashing it. Personally I think Peugeot engines are made of cheese!

To get it where I want it I can see it will be around 1k.

To do list:
Ph3 headlights,
Ph3 door strips,
rallye blanks,
195/50/15 tyres
Possibly lower it.

It'll tap, no question, join the GTI-6 owners club forums and have a read. GTi-6 engine is basically an Mi16 with improved internals, its been around for years and is an excellent engine, very strong and powerful for its time. On a Renault RR I attended years back, there were 2 GTi-6's, mine made 148bhp ATW and the other 141bhp ATW, the best 172 on the day made 142bhp ATW, most were under 140bhp, for an engine that doesn't use VVT its very good.

Doesn't seem like that much of a bargain to me anymore, you can pick them up for a grand that haven't had rebuilds so don't tap.

Good luck with it though, awesome cars, only one I've owned for years, 7 years to be precise! I've been to the ring 3 times, done various trackdays and its never broke down. In 12 months I had a 172, it broke down regular including 2 gearboxes, couldn't take track work, bit boring to drive imo as well!

Oldskool Pugs FTW!

Im more worried about the bottom end failing when I put the shiny new head on!

Its not a bargain any more but its mint. I thought about just getting another engine and putting that in but I cba really. I converted a saxo vtr to a vts last month so I didn't want too much work.

The guy who had it before me had it for 14 years and he nearly cried when I put it onto the transporter. Its got a load of receipts recently for lots of stuff that goes on 306s like ball joints, track rod ends, bottom arms, shockers. Plus its black on 80k which makes it worth plenty more ;)

Ive had a loads of 306 D, D Turbos, HDIs etc over the years. My first decent one was a gold D Turbo that took some amount of abuse back in my younger days!

The petrol 306s go for peanuts over here while the diesel ones go for a fortune if they are clean and tidy.

Aye true, not many on under 100k nowdays, mine is on 93k but my mates using it daily to commute in so might crack 100k under his use before I get it back!

Been a lazy c-unt and still having access to a car I still haven't refitted the head. Its going on this weekend. I have however got some new wheels. They aren't in the best of condition but I think they will look awesome when they have been refurbed.

For all the haters, I have seen an s16 with some 15s that were staggered and it suited it!

Rears are 8x15 ET0 and fronts are 15x7 ET40 The rears just fit, but I need my friend to machine some hubcentric spacers up for the fronts.
Heres a pic of a rear 1 with a 185/55/15 tyre on. I still need to decide what sizes Im going to fit.

I know it won't handle that well but I'm not going to thrash it for the first k.
Excuse the pics I had to take them quickly at work!

Bit of an update. Got everything legit with it last week. All it needed for the MOT was a drivers side ball joint and a wiper blade. Well chuffed, so I treated it to a valet and a polish.

Ive done 400 miles over this weekend and tickled it for the first couple hundred then started opening it up. No knocking, no tapping and no smoke. Pulls like a train and has a more noticeable pull after 80 then my vts and my 205 mi16 strangely enough.

Fitted some rallye blanks tonight to freshen up the front end. Pics to follow. I've decided not to put the compomotives on, its a lot of effort for some old escort wheels.

Minor issue with the MPG for my liking though... 24.1 over 400 miles! When I boot it I can see the gauge going down. Its on par with my race cammed mk2 golf :( As much as I love it and have wanted a GTI6, I don't think I can keep it. Its close to exactly how I would want it, full history, decent miles, black.

The list goes on... But insurance is raping me, over 2k!! Now I wouldnt mind 2k insurance if I could still get over 25mpg but I can't. And its not that quick so I think it might be sold by next week!

Ive had 2 GTI6s, one blaze and standard, one black and tuned, loved both equally but definitely not got the clios response to input. Much lazier reactions but can be such a hoot sideways!
Black looked gorgeous:

Had cat cams, twin tubi decat, full stainless, BMC induction, top and bottom struts and was freshly rebuilt with no tapping :D

Just got back from looking at an absolutely mint black RSturbo which I am going to swap the GTI6 for. Its been dry stored for the last 6 years and is off a friend of a friend. I haven't been this giddy about a car since I started driving. There will be a big project thread and explanation when I get it.

I cant hold back the excitement and I don't think I will sleep tonight. This isnt THE car but the body work is just as shiny. It needs putting back together but progress thread will explain.
