Steam is a superb piece of software and a superb service. It works without any hitches at all - it means you always own the game and can always re-download if you lose it - it helps to stamp out game piracy which is good for us all - it means the funds go direct to the devs and not to the greedy publishers. What's not to like about it? it just works. You also get the latest games on the morning of release without even opening your front door.
Maybe they've sorted it out since HL2 was first released, but I don't know because it pissed me off that much. That was back in the days when I was stuck on 512k BB and every fecking time I reloaded my saved game (in single player - like WTF has that got to do with verifying with Steam?) I had to wait until it checked my account credentials.
I hated it - so much so that as soon as I finished HL2, I uninstalled it, put it back on the shelf and forgot all about it. I thought that was the benchmark of turdiness, until EA released EA Downloader for the booster packs for BF2. What an absolute joke that is.
Download the two available booster packs (which clearly you've already paid for and now approaching 1GB in combined size) and all is well. Yet you can't offline store your booster packs, so when (presumably) the third and fourth booster packs are made available, you'll be looking at 2GB worth of redownloading the stuff that you've already downloaded once before!
I really hate the way things are going. I know why they are doing it - it's cheaper to push out products online, and like you say, it helps reduce piracy. It's also easier in these days of cheap broadband, but things like EA Downloader are just piss poor. I'd rather pay double the price and have the product in a DVD case on my shelf. To highlight the madness even further, I can do a clean reformat of Windows XP, complete with drivers (without updates though) in 45 minutes dead. Reinstalling BF2 from scratch can take anything up to 3 hours. Again, piss poor planning and implementation from EA. :dead: Shame on them.
Anyways Roy, you've been quiet recently. Not been on the forum much?
