Handbrake adjusting

  PH1 172
Hi all

Need to tighten my handbrake up (ph1 172) and wondered how I do it :)

Done a search in the guide section and only found a quick thing about tightening a 182 handbrake, is this the same for the ph1 172?

Help will be appreciated :)

put the hand brake on and lift up the lower cover on the handbreak its self
under there is a 10mm nut
release the hand brake and tighten the nut untill it works properly

Sitting in the car now looking at the 10mm nut thinking how do you tighten the nut when the handbrake is down as you can't get to it unless you have a really really deep socket?

Also just to clarify I need to tighten the handbrake as in to say the cable as I have to pull the handbrake up high before it does anything.....does this 10mm nut do this?

On mk2 Clios they have the adjuster nut behind the centre section heat shield right under the handbrake. Remove the heatshield and adjust the nut using a deep socket. However on some mk2ph1s only there is also an adjusting nut on the handbrake lever, this can be seen by removing the plastic cover on the back of the handbrake itself. This can easily be adjusted using a deep socket.

So with the handbrake down how do I adjust this nut by the handbrake as you can't get to it or do I put the handbrake down as much as possible without obscuring the nut and then tighten it?

use a long socket and just release the hand break enough to loose the tension on the cable, tighten the nut a few turns and try,

repeat untill its tight enough

Update:

Me being silly asking the questions above I could see the nut you lot were on about, don't know how I missed the one staring me in the face and was looking at the one further in the gap lol.... I have adjusted the right nut now and found that the handbrake travels less distance to put it on but I have also found that when on the following happens:

Passenger rear wheel is held in place and doesn't move but the driver's side rear wheel keeps moving and is not held by the handbrake.......I have checked the cable and I can't see anywhere where it has snapped and it even moves in and out by the brake disc when the handbrake is on or off but it just it just doesn't hold the wheel at all. Checked when the brake pedal is pressed and the wheel is held fine.....

Sorry for the long post but does anybody have any ideas?

^ Think when its stretched it means easiest way would be to get a new cable. Heard there about £20 a side. Not sure how hard / easy they are to fit.

the end that hooks on to the caliper might of snapped off mate. that is what has just happens to mine and by the sounds of what is happening to yours it is identicle. get under the car and have a look at the bottom of the rear caliper. there is a small arm thing that should have a cable hooked into it. if there isnt, look at the other side and you will see what it should look like.

Resurrecting an old post of mine:

After all the above helpful replies :) I had to get my handbrake cables replaced in the end :(.

Now exactly a year on and I am having the same problems again:S handbrake has to travel a lot further before it will even hold the car and even then it is not solid so forget about parking on a slight hill....

Does anybody know why this has happened again and is there anything I can do to stop it happening again if I have to replace them again?

Cheers
