Handling.

Ok, my car handles great at the moment - but I feel there is a little more to be had.

At the moment, Ive just got some -35mm GMAX Springs up front and torsion bar lowered -35mm at the back - standard shockers. I would say 80% of bodyroll has gone.. but I can still feel some round certain bends.

Under sharp turning, I can feel a bit of sideways action going on.. and I dont want to for obvious reasons...

How can I get rid? Or is it something I have to live with?

I went in Mats Valver (now Adis) and that thing stuck to the ground - didnt move out of line once.. it did have coilovers though - is this the answer?

your car hasnt got the setup that the 16V has and youll need the entire suspension assembly and whatever Mat had if you want it to be the same. The non sporting clios just arent setups to take corners at a blistering pace.

Its more about geometry than harder springs and harder shocks....if you want, jsut weld them solid!

I know, I never said it had..

There must be a way to improve what I already have though..

Ive spoken to Steve who has both an RT and a 16v.. the 16v is a lot more solid at the back, but his RT aint far behind - he has Willy shocks on the back of his RT though!

i used to have gmax -35 springs on mine, now put spax -55 on, noticed an improvement in handpling. so many more coils on the spax springs. could stiffen the car up by putting adjustable shocks on, was going to do it myself beofre i diecided to get a valver in few months when i have finished uni!

Well, Im using standard shockers at the moment.
I could put some Willy ones on the rear as these are a straight swap.. Mat has some Valver ones, so maybe Ill get them! Im sure theyll be the same - that should sort some bodyroll out - they are a lot stiffer.

Im sure the lowering has sorted some of that roll out, but I think the next logical thing to do is get some stiffer shocks..

Thanks guys!

A mate of mine who used to run clio cup racers (valvers) was saying they used to set up the rear torsion bars "to fight against each other" ie so when the car is jacked up at the rear the wheel doesnt dangle down, if you understand????

hmm, that would make it mega low.. and I cant go mega low with the kit.

I just need stiffer shocks to start with - see what happens then..

Willy ones fit the back.. so I might try and get hold of a pair (or 16v ones).

Willy shocks wont be th revalations your hoping. Yea they have a higer damping and rebound rates but thats only 1/4 of the story.

What im trying to get across to people is that if you only fiddle with shocks ans springs well, your pretty much stuck with the original handling characteristics of the car.

The rear torsion assembly on the non-sport clios use 2 torsion bars, not 4. THeir relative spring rate is far lower and running harder rebound shocks to the rear will get rid of roll, but who said roll was a bad thing?

I had an RT with koni all rd, then swapped the rears for gas monroes as they suited the rear spring rate better. It would go round better than std, but it was jsut grip you were playing with, not a great handling car.

Still, its only a bit fo fun aint it.

Get some cheap non OE 16V rears from monroe or Gabriel, they are actually quite good!
