Hard wearing tyre

So I did my first track day Saturday and it was brilliant but also slightly frustrating as after the 3rd session I had to take things pretty careful. The reason being that my Goodyear eagle f1s that I've always rated very highly on the road started graining badly and as they aren't that old I didn't want to ruin them so much that I couldn't use them for the road. I was pretty suprised they were that bad as it was only 6 degrees!

So my question is for my next track day what is a harder wearing tyre that I can really give some abuse and then drive home on? I'm not bothered about slick levels of grip the goodyears grip was perfectly fine. I'd probably still run the goodyears on the back anyway as they were still stone cold after a session so having a load more grip at the front would probably be a bit dodgy.

You'll find that all tyres look like that after a session on track. They'll clear up with some normal use.

The only thing you'll get that level of result from, is a track based tyre. Think how much work it's doing all of the time compared to the road ?

Get yourself some Federal RSR / R888 / Nangkang NS2-R ... something like that.

Keep an eye on pressures when you come in and make sure you're not over-working the front tyres, i.e.: spinning up the wheels / under-steering off when there's no more grip etc.

as the yellow mans says, if you're going to do track days even irregularly then a set of cheap wheels with sticky track tyres would be a great solution.

Could also be your driving - if you are understeering round all the corners (like Clarkson driving the Alfa 147) then you'll overheat the tyres much quicker. Get some tuition if you haven't had any already.

All tyres will get clumps of rubber stuck to them after blasting round a track. Track tyres will last longer before going off/overheating because of the larger tread blocks.

There was no understeering or wheelspinning! And I did have tution for one session I wasn't driving like a lune which is why I was surprised they went so fast but to be honest they seem to look fine again now they have done some road miles, maybe I was overreacting wish I'd taken a picture now. I might pick up just two wheels for the fronts for the next trackday.

I suspect you were just seeing "pickup" as A) it occurs on all types of tyre on tarmac & always clears up after more mileage and B) Although Martin Brundle uses the word every 5 seconds it is actually a very specific phenomenon that is quite rare on light low powered cars.

Having seen another thread just bear mine with nangang ns2r's being recommended I can't help thinking that the harder compound version might do me well. Does anyone run them just on the front with a normal summer tyre on the rear for trackdays or is there to much of a grip differance to do this safely?
