Head/Cam/Chip

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

Any one had this done?

May be lucky enough to raise some funds and was thinking having it done but would like imput from some one else?

it maybe worth thinking along the lines of TB instead if you going down the road of serious head work. Although TB will prob cost alittle more (think someone quoted £1800 for the kit) the performance improvments for £££ are much better.

Youll prob see almost 190 - 200 bhp with TB.

I was thinking of a TB kit myself but im slightly unsure now.

Some people have said that unless a smaller radiator goes in the gains (cos of the small space and heat) is just gonna be about 25bhp - could probably get that from just a gasflow and the right kind of cams - cheaper as well. Also bear in mind that buying the kit is one thing - fitting it and maintaining it is another.....for a little more cash you could have a turbo with more power and less hassle!

Mind you - done right, itd be fecking class!

Think with the VAT its about £1,800ish at BB Tuning, was wondering how it improves low down torque, acceleration top end speeds etc.

Would like T/Bs but might be out of my price range - check out the pics on Hill Powers website!!

yeah would look / sound sweet!

I suppose it depends on the power delivery though. Although throttle bodies might only gain about the same bhp and head/chip/cams, the torque increase might be more (i.e make it pull as good as a 2ltr from lower revs).

Dunno like!

Get a strong gearbox and clutch fitted for starters m8!

Its fairly simple to get them bolted on but the time (and money) comes from setting them up PROPERLY as you need a new computer to run them which needs mapped by someone professional - rolling road needed etc.

Aside from that you could basically say its just spanner work but for the above reasons you cant really do it by yourself unlike a turbo kit etc.

Even a turbo kit would require some one with alot of mechanical know how though surely??

I wouldnt even dream of taking an engine appart and putting things like that on it!

I think Ill stick with the idea of getting the head and cams with a chip, at least all the works carried out by some one who knows what theyre doing.

True but you can get turbo kits with decently mapped chip off the shelf so less p1ssing about with "computers and all that w**k!"

Still a serious bit of work like but less maintenance - throttle bodies need to be sychronised other wise cylinders can run lean lean while some dont etc....

balancing TBs is only really a matter of making sure the spindle isnt twisted.

Throttle bodies will give a higer peak gain than any comparable mod retaining the std plenham.....its also hard to compare as keeping a std head & cams but running TBs will give a totally different drive to wild head & cams on a plenham which will not be as torquey, idle as smooth, be as responsive as TBs.

Build up your plenham based engine then swap to TBs after IF its a viable choice.
