Head Gasket going / gone!!?

  '99 Vectra 1.8
Recently took the other half's '99 1.2 into Evans Halshaw for the recalled bonnet catch. They did the obligatory health check hoping we'd spend some money with them... most of the things they have mentioned on it we either already knew about or checked out and decided they were right but they have also mentioned a problem with the head gasket (nothing specific but they ticked the red box).

I can't see where they have got this from, as far as I know symptoms are oily deposits in the water and oil leaks. I have checked the water and it is fine, there is no oil leaking on the drive and the oil level on the dipstick is about halfway... just as it was when I checked it a few months ago.

But now Hayley is worried about it because she heard off a friend of hers that her Saxo packed up one day out of the blue, details vague but mentioned something to do with the head gasket.

Is there something I'm missing or something else I need to check as I can't see how this could have happened without showing any of the symptoms mentioned above?

Meh.

I really wouldn't worry. There's nothing much you can do if it decides to go. It's incredibly rare on those engines too.

Coffee coloured liquid on the inside of the oil filler cap is a telltale. Also, loss of power.
