Headlight washer

Im going to sound really thick here but anyway, me being new to renault and the clio, i have no idea how to work the headlight washer.

Is a matter of having the lights switched on and spraying your windscreen?

Sorry about the newbie question but i honestly havnt a clue how to use them.

Mine seem to work in a sequence, i.e. wash windows (no xenon wash), wash windows (no xenon wash), wash... (xenon jets clean as well) then repeat.

Or is it how long you hold the washer stalk? anyone?
