Headunit in my Renault 5

  133/225/CLS AMG
I've just bought a JVC headunit for my Renault 5.

Removed the old cassette deck without a problem. Trouble is I've connected the new head unit to the existing connections but nothing. No power or response from the headunit at all.

I have noticed that of the two connecting plugs that connect to the existing wires, one of the ones from the car only had two connections, the male connection from the HU has about 4 wires going into it.

Is this the problem? I would have thought that it should just connect up and work. Well thats what happened with all the other headunits I've put in?!?!?!

Help please!!

P.S - Its a 1995 Renault 5 Campus.

The R5 didn’t have a permanent power supply as the OEM Phillips radio had a capacitor memory back up.
What you need is either and adaptor from autoleads which will have the extra wire in it or simply connect the battery supply lead on your JVC unit to the nearest permanent live supply.
I think the cigarette lighter is live all the time on the R5, but check first.

cheers mate thats really handy!! :D

I'll if I can get an adapter for it.

Just to clarify, basically the HU needs a constand power supply from the battery??

Yes, the wiring diagram supplied with your JVC unit will show that both switched 12v and permanent 12v are required.
The plug in your car has only Ignition controlled (switched) 12v.

I see, I take it that it will need the permanent supply to remember settings like the radio tuning etc??? Unlike the old one where everything was manual?

Thats exactly correct Alex. If you simply wire up the permanant supply you wont need to spend any money on an adaptor.

Am I gonna have to chop one of the connections from the back of the headunit??? Thats the only thing I'm wary of, don't wanna knacker the connectors!!! lol

No, you dont need to chop it, just connect up the one additional wire required.

Managed to get it sorted, found a power lead that would have been used of there was a fag lighter, snipped that, extended it and connected it to the yellow lead on the HU. :D :D

Advice much appreciated.

For £70, I definitely thought it was worth doing. Especially considering that the standard speakers sound 100 times better with this headunit. Goes to show how pants the OE one was.
