Hear selector issues

Just been out to my Mk2 and I'm unable to engage reverse gear, the collar lifts however the gear stick wont move to left to select. Another thing is when trying to select forward gears it is very vague and theres a horrible noise like the selector rod is hitting a heat shield or exhaust on brief inspection it does look like the rod from the stick to the gearbox has dropped. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be? Hoping not to be the gearbox

Check the return spring on the underside of the gearbox mate. Be surprised if this isn’t the cause tbh.
They wear through and make gear selection awkward.

Had a look under the car before work everything seemed ok took it to the garage where I used to work turned out to be the whole gear stick assembly. Searching the internet for a new 1
