Heavy on petrol??

Has anyone else experienced heavy fuel usage. I'm driving a Clio Mk1 1.4 and im only getting around 20mpg.
Anyone with ideas to what could be the root problem?
Great car, but costing me a fortune in juice.

20mpg??? mines a 1.6 and i'm dissapointed that mines dropped to 27/28mpg normally get 31

im getting 35 in a 172.

a172/182's seem to be more economical than the earlier smaller petrol engines, best i can hope for is 34mpg on a long drive down the motorway.

So i've obviously got a problem, do any of you have an clues to the cause of this problem. Do Mk1 Clios have a history of excessive fuel consumption?

Is it the ECU or the the cat?
