Help diagnose my engine noise (videos inside)

  Ph1 172.
Well, my car makes an horrid whining noise when driven, i occurs at all revs, but the higher the revs the higher the whine. I had the cam and aux belt replaced today and the whine persists.

In these videos you're listening for the high pitched whine.

Idling - not really as noticable here.

This one is from in the car, again you are listening for the background whining, unfortunately the camera hasn't picked it up brilliantly.

Any suggestions? It really is doing my head in.

Does it get worse when you turn your lights on?
I have a simular sound comming from the enginebay which gets louder when the lights are turned on.

Cheers guys, i'm waiting for the stuff to come through from the garage now detailing exactly what they did, I'll then know if the idler was changed. I have a feeling just the aux belt was changed and not the idlers or tensioners.

If the idler was not replaced any idea how long and much it would be to replace is

ChrisRS - the noise is persistant, it's no worse with the lights on. It's just a continual whining.

Cheers for your suggestions guys. I'm going to need to get some time off work and book it in to a garage i think. I can't wait to be rid of the noise!

when u had your belts done did they repalce the sound deadening cover that goes over ur cam belt ect, its just i noticed in the first vid that u can see ur auxillary belt, and you shouldnt be able to, after my belts were done i noticed a whine, but there wasnt one b4 it went in, turns out they didnt put the sound deadening back which is why i noticed the diffo.

That top tensioner looks old and dirty in those vids, i bet they only did the belt. Changing my kit next week as i have a squeak from one of them.

The reason you can see it is because this video was taken in between the old cambelt cover being taken off and the new one being ordered and fitted. The old one had been loose for the best part of 20,000 miles (previous owner never recified it) and is the reason why the cambelt was changed early. Unfrotunately, when i took the car in to have the belts changed it looks like they didn't touch the aux belt (i certainly wasn't billed if they did)

edit: all the videos after the first one were taken after the belt change.

Not sorted this yet Matt? I'll have a noisey if you like

No it isn't :dapprove: I was hoping it was going to get sorted when the car went in to have the Cam and Aux replaced. I was gutted when it came back and the noise was still there. I'm going to get some time off work and take it in to get it sorted. Hopefully for the final time.

Hi there, i have exactly the same noise coming from my 172 clio, for the moment ive decided its the alternator as it seems to get really hot really quick, and somthing is making a real bad smell like melting plastic or somthing, which seems to be coming from that area. I took the alternator out lastnite the bearings seem fine but im gona have it checked by a auto electrician. Not sure if this will help you at all.

UPDATE:

The problem is now fixed. I took the car to a garage and had a full aux belt kit fitted. The noise was, in this case at least, coming from the idler. The one that was taken off the car wasn't spinning freely at all, and when it was spun by hand it was making a grinding noise, obviously when his was then spun at thousands of rpm the noise turned to a high pitch whine.

I hope this helps some people who might have the same noise in the future.

I'm sure there's a trick with a screwdriver where when its touching a part with a worn or loose bearing it makes a different tone...a bit like tapping a loose wheel nut is a different sound from a tight one.
