  Phase 2 172
Was checking my car over today for a noise coming from the near side... Checked the suspension etc and it all seemed ok.

Notices the driveshaft had some weird side to side movement so drained the gear oil and took the shaft out. Only to find that one of the 3 bearings at the end of the shaft has collapsed and all the needles from the bearing have disappeared inside the box.

Managed to find four of the needles out of 20-30 floating about the oil so the rest must be within the gearbox.

So now I'm thinking gonna have to get a new box and driveshaft anyone had this before?

My Own Limited advice would be to get a second opinion from another garage if You take it to any garage it is worth a second opinion mate. I would suggest Not to go to a garage fearing the worst cause they in My own experience will tell You the worst. This could be a very simple thing to fix However I am sure people here will suggest otherwise.
They may say You need a new gear box But I would suggest You don`t listen to that and take it to 3 other garages at least. I had a mate who had a 172 and they said his gearbox was nackered. he sent it to another garage and the only problem was the gear linkage witch was £ 74 to replace the linkages and all bushes. after that the gearbox was perfect.

i never took it to a garage i checked it out myself, the thing thats bothering me is all the needles from the bearing that has came apart are now inside the gearbox and will be in and around the diff etc. i could just stick a shaft in it and then few weeks later those needles could wreck the box.

also forgot to mention the box does crunch sometimes going into 3rd and 4th. so it would probably be best just to change it.

You've kind of answered your own question really chap and ideally it needs stripping. Did you check the box oil you drained for any of the rollers?

  Phase 2 172
yeah the rollers i found (4) came out the oil once it was drained.

dunno if i can be hassled with stripping the box down so yeah the more i think about it the more i realise i'm probably gonna have to just change it out.

new box, had this happen myself and flushed the box through quite a few times, 2 days later it spat the circlip on the new shaft

The boxes on these really are made from cheese aren't they.

What mileage you on mate?

Mine is on 155k now still with original engine and box (I checked the numbers on RenaultNET). Torque kills them (which thankfully the standard cars don't have) but if you keep your box oil fresh and at the correct level they'll last.

Where do you check box oil level? ?? I'll have to get mine checked. .

Plastic wingnut at the front of the box. Just under the clutch cable bracket.

On level ground with the wingnut out, the oil should be at the hole level.

hi, just a notice to be not forgotten..when you change the manifold, you have to change/adjust the cat/exhaust.
