Help with getting a new 182 key!

  RB 182 FF
Hi guys, I know this has been covered before and people will say use the search feature but I'm after up to date info on how much a genuine Renault blipper key will cost and where to get one?! I only have 1 key with my new car so need a spare, is Renault the only place you can get one and how much have others paid for one? Any help appreciated, cheers:)

Key prices are about to go up in the air as new part numbers are appearing for key "kits" containing two keys for the price of one. Key fobs are normally around the £90 mark then another £40 for coding... retail that is but i may be able to get them a bit cheaper but it still needs coding.

Hi Mick, thanks very much for the reply. That info is of great help, I really don't mind paying that sort of money because at the end of the day if I lose my key I'm well shafted! Are you able to code the key as well or is that a Renault job?! Sorry if I sound daft I just know absolutely nothing about this sort of thing! Cheers, Gaz.

I can code keys yes but you need to check your service book for the Quality Certificate as i need the 12digit Supp. Key No. which if you don't have i will have to get it from Renault.net which will cost £25 extra.

Hi Mick just checked the service book and the supp key no. has been left blank, I guess I'll be paying an extra £25. If you could get me a quote for the overall price I may well go ahead and get one, I feel uneasy only having 1 key! Cheers again, Gaz.

I take it back, keys on vehicles this age aren't covered by the new key-set discount... it applies to VIN coded keys/cards only (ghey).

To *supply* a new key fob blank for a 172/182 will be £72.58 +vat then, if you want the key blade adding thats another £13.95 +vat (it takes 2-3 days for blanks to arrive so bare that in mind). Then, assuming we need to obtain the access code, coding the key is another £60 making a grand total of £163.74 including the dreaded vat.

Cheers for the info and quote Mick I really appreciate it. I'll more than likely go ahead and have one done but I'm just awaiting my funds to look a bit more favourable before I do. I will get in touch when I decide to go ahead with it . Thanks again, Gaz.

Is it possable to re-code a second hand fob?

The way the keyfobs work is they are "encoded" with a 12 character alpha-numeric "key" which is specific to each vehicle and this "key" can only be written or assigned into the fobs memory once which is why a keyfob that has previously been assigned to another vehicle cannot be re-allocated or re-programmed to another. The newer generation of keys are slightly different but they are VIN code specific and are ordered specially direct from Renault SAS.

You can however de-code and re-code a key from a specific vehicle back to that vehicle as many times as you like say for example should the UCH need replacing the keys will need to be re-assigned (A Clio II can have a minimum of one and a maximum of five keys assigned at any one time).

More than likely no, it will be of been bought from a 'supermarket' type of car dealer instead of Renault themselves.

Do you have an alarm or locking wheel bolts? These cars generally never came with them.

Hey Heez, i have done some reserch on here this afternoon and have spoken to renault and all seems to point to same thing as you said about the car comming from a supermarket company. There are wheel locking nuts fitted, serial numbers on the windows and an sigma alarm fitted but surley could have been done at any time. The alarm light is located next to the hazzard switch on the dash, am i right in thinking if it was fitted by renault it would be fitted some where near the gear stick?

Just bought a clio cup today and it only has a single key and that doesnt even work the central locking!! (not ideal when its the only way to lock the car!)
anyway is it almost certainly just going to be a dead battery in the fob? As central locking works via button inside car.

Any help would be much appreciated

They had to provide it under block exemption rules chap and was part of the PDI check list. Technically its vehicle specific information and so should be provided with the documentation at the time of sale along with other bits of info such as the radio code though this was often not always done. This only applies to the older vehicles though as the new setup requires to CLIP to connect to RenaultNET and authenticate with the code servers before allowing the hardware to code or re-pair the current vin-coded key/card setups.

Popped into the mobile key/shoe repair people parked up in local industrial estate and he does them too!

My misses first told me that she seen it advertised on his trailer i just laughed it off...
but she was right... Priced the clio key up at £108 all in and it would be identical !

Jamier, they're called "Clones" and are becoming very popular at the minute.

Technically they're bad but really there's no right or wrong with them... they're essentially a carbon copy key with a duplicate S3 from your original.

From a diagnostic point of view though they are wrong as the car cannot distinguish between which key is being used at ay one time so it makes identifying a key fault a bit more tricky. When Harphams Ph1 came in for a health check I found one of his keys was a clone and only noticed it as no matter which key I used it always showed "Key 1"
