Hesitant acceleration (juddering) when turning and under load..?

  172/A4 Tdi
Just picked up my 172 from Essex, had a good solid test drive, nice bit of slow driving and a bit of beans in a straight line just to check it pulled alright and clutch was fine etc...

HOWEVER - Upon my drive home, I came up to a roundabout and on the exit I gave it a bit of right foot and the car jumped and jerked about until I'd completed the corner and then accelerated absolutely flawlessly...?

It ONLY does it when the wheel is turned and you put it under load. In a straight line it's perfect every time. It feels quite a 'physical' power loss/gain/loss/gain (rocks your head back and forth lol) within split seconds. It's not like a misfire where it just 'dies off' it's almost like something is trying to stop the car from turning over?!

Any ideas? Did a search but couldn't find anything :( Worried I've bought a seriously broken car and didn't realize :(

Thanks in advance.

Kirky.

CV joints.

Better to get get a new drive shaft. Probably both sides are knackered, it's a weak point on Clios.

Almost feels like someone is cutting the fuel off every 1/4 of a second, makes the car jump quite badly :-/ you still reckon cv joints / driveshafts?

Does it make any knocking or banging noises when cornering? A CV joint will normally cause a grinding or knocking noise whilst cornering.

No it's quiet - that's why I was a little sceptical about the cv or driveshaft. It really feels like an ignition/fuel problem but ONLY happens when putting the power down WHILE cornering. Its the strangest thing! Lol.

I test drove a 2002 plate 172 with exactly this issue, I didn't stick around long enough to find out what it was.

If the battery was fooked, and the PAS pump was draining it when turning, would that power drain cause an ignition issue?

The power steering is aux belt driven I believe.
So if the pump was forked, and you were trying to steer it would put more strain on the engine, thus causing it to hesitate etc etc.

Apologies if I am grossly mistaken!

Do the revs drop off when working the steering at fast idle? Where are you based? I'll gladly take a look at it for you.

Well tbh, it only idles at about 800rpm all the time. when you say 'fast idle', where should that come into play? (Please excuse my lack of knowlege.... Only owned a Clio for a day lol)

I'm in Guildford buddy, But if you're less than say 2hrs away, I'd still drive to you for the specialist help :) Really appreciate the offer!

MicKPM, I get what you mean now - When she's first started it idles at 1,000rpm and when using the steering it drops off to 700ish? So yeah, that seems to be working alright - Which I presume means the steering pressure sensor works as well? So what else relates the steering and the ignition/fuelling of the car? I'm going to put it on my mates diagnostic machine tomorrow and see if any faults come up, but somehow I don't think they will :(

...Just to add more to the 'what it could be' list.... Someone has just suggested the Diff?!! Evidentally that would only cause issues under load and lock (true enough) but theres still a lack of 'mechanical' noise when it kangaroo's!! Its just like the power cuts out and then comes back on several times till you straighten the wheel. Bloody French cars - Should have kept my ST150. Lol.

The Diff, specifically the planetry gears are a possible yes as the Clios are known for chewing them up when they've been abused but other things can cause issues to like engine mounts.

Diags first to rule out anything obviously wrong electrically or with the cars ability to fuel the engine and go from there.

Going to put it on the Snap-On machine and go for a drive. My cheapy eobd reader showed no codes? maybe its just not good enough to see them? Think I've bought a right shed to be honest. FML lol. Should never have gone away from German stuff :)

Code reading is not diagnostics matey, that's what silly garages call it though as they don't know how to use the tool correctly. Its only a car at the end of the day and everything is fixable so don't panick and if its a management/load issue the live data will throw it up.

There is a product coming on to the market hopefully very soon for Renaults that is similar to products such as VagCom and FiatECUScan (I use both of these for VAG and Fiat/Alfa as they're closer to dealer tools than most so called "top end" diag equipment for coding and activations). How well it will function Vs its price is unknown but its been in development for a long time so fingers crossed it will work well and be affordable to the enthusiast... though i'm not sure i'd trust some people not to destroy their cars with access to in depth coding features.

Lol, yeah I know there is a BIG difference between the realms of diagnostic/code readers. I'm hoping the SnapOn Modus picks it up alright. Bosch Coil pack on staff = £38.00 for example, so I'm trying not panic too much - I'm sure Ben in a worst case scenario it'll only be a few hundred quid. Where abouts are you based? I'd definately consider the drive if we have no luck with the Modus.. Always worth it to see a specialist!

Yeah an up-to-date Modus will be fine with Renault Live Data mapping but if you do have any issues a Clip is a usefull thing to have in your tool kit ;)

  172/A4 Tdi
A clip you say? Given how bad my initial experience with this car is going - the only 'clip' I need to make sure I have is the one loaded with hollowpoint rounds that fits a Glock, so I'm equipped to shoot myself when it annoys me too much
;-)

....owned it for 3 years, replaced 2 shocks and the pads lol. That's ALL that went wrong.

Definatly a 'better' car - just not as fun to drive as the Clio ;-)

Lols, the ST has a better first gear than the whole clio box put together!

  172/A4 Tdi
Don't talk to me about ford gearboxes. My layshaft snapped on my ST so I had a Jamsport box with quaife diff. Original IB5 is a pile of crap.

Right, I'm displaying 2 faults. One is 'Throttle Potentiometer track 2 circuit' and the other is 'sensor 1 reference voltage sensor supply voltage' - any thoughts on what these may be linked to? Autodata is being about as much use as a chocolate fire-guard!

  172/A4 Tdi
Well.. by 8pm we'd fixed it - Lol. Wiring issue - shorting out the sensors, cleaned it up, put some shrink-wrap round it and a wee bit of insulation foam and she's running sweet as a nut! Chuffed. ;)
