so my 172 has ET48 right.

if i put on some ET38 wheels would i be getting 10mm wider track?

iv'e got a 172 mk2 with eibach sportsline springs & 17"s with an ET37 they fit fine no rubbing!!! so you should be fine m8.

mk2 172 is ET48.5, mine was down 40mm with ET38 on 195/45/16 with no problems.
