HIDs & police

  MG ZR 160 VVC
I originally had blue LED 'legal' sidelights fitted for about a year (E marked) and they passed my MOT. Never had any problems until recently I was pulled over twice and questioned about them / warned traffic don't like them. So I ordered some clear ones and then typically just a few days later get pulled over by unmarked traffic at 1am (late cinema showing ftw). Cop gives me a VDRS form and had to prove it had an MOT by going into station & then to prove I'd changed them get a embossing stamp from a MOT garage which costs £10. Fair play, not arguing really I was warned and he was actually a decent copper once talking.

Anyway thats the law for you so the clear ones arrived and were fitted the same day, but now i'm thinking of installing a 6000k HID kit as a friend is selling. Its only a 1.2 so theres no washers or projectors but it has the self adjusting settings so you can alter the height. Is this legal to have / MOT pass because I'm 'probably' going to be on the ANPR cameras now and I can't be bothered with being pulled over all the time but want HIDs without the £300 price tag :)

discuss?

IMO it would be a better bet to save for proper projector headlights. If you just sling a HID kit in your normal halogen headlights, they'll blind absolutely everyone and i doubt the police would take too kindly to them, considering the hassle you've already had with just sidelights!

Get the proper ones with the rear beam adjuster. The pikey 'bolt on and dazzle everyone on the road' look isn't good imo.

Some MOT testing stations fail cars with the bolt on Hid kit. Also as above, they often dazzle other road users as the beam scatters all ove the place.

Yeah I agree it could be asking for more trouble. Just found out its a H7R kit so its gives out less glare and eu approved / stamped if that helps

After the trouble youve had with just sidelights, Dont bother with HIDs in reflectors imo...

Asking for more trouble... But up to you.

I agree with Guysy. Surely you're faced with the same issue with a reflector versus projector setup where it'll just scatter/dazzle?

Theres a HID kid that's legal stamped?

Post the link please, Just interested.

Im looking out for a set of projector units but im not paying silly prices for some headlights, Even though they look the tits.

Rather wait for a sport.

Is it ever legal to put HID lights on a car that wasn't manufactured with them though? Even if you bought absolutely everything you could?

I have a HID kit on my 1.2 non sport and had no trouble with them, even passed a good few traffic police cars and nothing, not had anybody flashing at me or that either, ive just set my light adjusters down to the lowest.

There was an article in Redline a while ago about this.
Its a bit of a grey area, but the general rules are that they need to be E-marked, height adjustable, and have washer jets.
