High millage 172's any good?

Hi everyone, i am starting to miss my Phase 1 172. so I am considering selling my 106 GTI to get another Ph1 172. I Just woundered are the sport engines known to fail in high miles etc, if they have been well looked after? I know the 306 GTi-6 them engines still go like new in the high miles seen them with 180k on. My old c172 i bought with 80k on and was fine.

My last two phase-1 172's were on over 100k and both were fine.

There are plenty of low milers out there though.

Got that right sold mine on 88k and it went like s**t off a shovel

I think how the previous owner do the maintenance is important. And if he is a high rev guy all the time.

Have someone who own a 172 to do the test with you would be good I guess.

I've heard of a couple of people with high mileage 172s that said they were still running very well. I've had a few high mileage French hatches/hot hatches and providing they're maintained well they've always been great. In fact, my old 106GTI had just short of 90k on it when i killed it, and before the accident it was still a very quick car (easy match for 182 acceleration) and very reliable.

As someone's said, there are low mileage examples out there, but i guess a lot depends on your budget.

I have a ph2 172 and I have just passed the 97k mark. It still runs like new and I've never had any trouble with it. I picked mine up for 4k which was a bit of a steal so I snapped it up straight away.

im on 64k on a 53 plate and never had any issues at all. Runs absolutely fine and all im needing is to keep to the maintenance with the cam belt and water pump being done this year for the 5year anniversary.

Iv had mine since new so know everything thats been done with it. Never had mechanical issues and luckily the main problems which was mainly with the interior, 6 cd changer and usual top mount in suspension where dealt with under warranty. So all in all good stuff.

I was thinking of buying one with 110k on. reason been is i will get it cheap am a tight get lol, i run my saxo diesel on veg oil

Yea i know its with regards to maintance, i just woundered with it been a VVT weather they are known to not like the high miles. My clio diesel DCI annoyed me as injectors etc are weak in the high miles!
