high temp, coolant low

  mk 2 clio
so a few weeks ago i was driving from mine to the petrol garage and the temperature light came on and was almost on the max. got my mate over, he looked at it, filled up the coolant and nothing, after a while we took what looks like a dustcap off the thermostat, there was a hissing noise like letting down a tyre, then after that it was fine. i kept an eye on coolant level and topped it up once since, yesterday.

then today i was driving with my mates over so another skatepark,(bmx thing) and stuck in traffic by blackwall tuneel was fine, got moving again, light came on, so i pulled over as soon as i could, let her cool down a bit and the bottle was completely empty, filled it up with some water my mate had in a bottle, was from a tap and some anti freeze, but there was a lot of water dripping from the bottom of the car, so im hoping its a leak. after filling it up i turned it on, the fan kicked in and went straight down to its normal temp when i drive, so i carried on. i also did the dustcap thing on the thermostat to see if it was that again, but no hiss sound this time.

so i carried on and got to my destination, as i was close to there than home now, and the car had a good few hours to cool down, but i did have to fill it up again with more water. then on route to another park 10 minutes up the road, temp came up again, so pulled over, let it cool down, filled it up some more, had some dinner, letting it cool down again and took it easy on the way home, in which the temperature was fine, even though i did get into a fair amout of stop start traffic, if youve ever been woolich ferry you will know what i mean.

once id parked at home, temperature was fine, but the bottle was empty yet again, could have been my fault this time as i had left the lid on the headlight under the bonnet and not screwed it back on.

im really not sure what the problem is, my mates coming over tomorrow to look at it for me, he used to work in a garage a while back, but im hopeing its a leak or and easy repair.

any one have any ideas on what it could be or any resolutions to fix it, theyll be much appreciated as i am clueless when it come to bits like this, i got a lot to learn still

Radiator, waterpump or thermostat housing areas are the standard 1.2 leaky spots

Mines got the exact same problem as yours does, if it gets to a high temperature I put the heaters on full in the car, as that helps with lowering it until getting home.

Ive got a leak somewhere but cant ever seem to find where from, but wherever the car is parked there's always a water puddle by the front drivers wheel, garage I always go to for my cars told me its the waterpump on mine as its making a bit of a noise anyway.

My mate said my water pump leaking. Sonny weathers it's the pump or the gasket. But just gonna replace both. But gonna pay in a garage as my mate ain't got the tools for it anymore and I'm pretty clueless.
