Hmm... Greenlight Insurance

Last week I renewed with Greenlight on the 172 at a premium of £750ish. Well ive just traded the car in for a 182, and they said they won't charge me any more for the upgrade of insurance, just the £25 admin fee which i have paid.

Well ive just looked for some other quotes for the 182 out of interest, and they're coming out at £200 cheaper

Direct Line = £557.55
Privilege = £553.35

So basically, it sounds like Greenlight have kept my premium the same, even though its clear it should be cheaper... and charged me £25 for doing so! I reckon if i was to get a brand new quote from greenlight it would be cheaper than my previous premium of £750 which they have kept the same!

Im not happy, what's everyone else's opinion?

agree mate, my insurers upped mine by a bit as I'm mid way through but like you I have found it £200 cheaper elsewhere. So renewal is looming!

im only into my second week of the policy, so i guess they think they can get away with charging me the same premium on the 182, when it should clearly be cheaper!

i should get some kind of refund of the difference surely?
Am i being unfair, or does this sound correct?

Cancel it then mate and take a new one out. I only kept mine going as I'd lose 5-6 months NCB by cancelling now.

Did you not know how much you were paying? Should have argued them down, I pay 580 inc all my mods.

i did yes, they told me my premium would stay the same. I phoned them from the Renault garage today as they needed a cover note to get my car reg transferred to the new car, so didnt really have time to shop around while sat at Renaults desk.

if they cant refund me any money, i'll just cancel the policy and ask for a refund so i can go elsewhere. I cant believe they had the cheek to charge me the £25 when they must have known the policy should have been much cheaper! :(

This is my 3rd year with them too...

I dont think they know it would be cheaper, they are an intermediary, they have to go get the quote for you.

Just have a word with the director, nice enough bloke.

awsome i'll ask for him then... ive always spoken to someone else when i phone up. Admittedly they've always been very helpful.

maybe they genuinly didnt realise i could insure the 182 for £200 less...

i know im going to greenlight in 3 months as directline want 900 p/a off me when ill have 3 years ncd and been driving for 4 years plus the cars fully armd, Greenlight said that mine would be alot less than 600, a saving of 300 means i can get the manifolds matchd and other work done.

how old are you?
i dont think Greenlight go any lower than 700 until u hit 24 on 172/182.

And you should be thinking about whether you are going to mod!!! Greenlight are good for this, they aint charged me for any mods, and i got absolutely everything listed, even down to the fact i removed the plastic belt holder on the roof at the back.

Elsewhere might be cheaper, but they tend to sting you/refuse your mods.

Greenlight seemed great price wise when I was 21/22 trying to insure hot hatches, don't get close to other quotes now I am pushing on 30 lol

im 23.

thats what they told me today. Neil wasnt in the office so i spoke to a couple of other people. They cant go lower on the 182 premium, so i said i want to cancel, as the original policy on the 172 only started 2 days ago. They said there would be a cancellation fee...

The policy is 2 days old... and the cancellation fee is £160!!

Thats a joke for a 2 day old policy!? I'll be ringing Neil on Monday and see what he says.

greenlight wont cover me as I got 9 points, but I got 6 yrs no claims bonus, so I went to priviledge and got a quote for the amount most people with a clean licence are paying with greenlight

Isnt there a law or guideline that states you can cancel any insurance policy within two weeks and you are entitled to all money back.

ive just read the Terms and conditions...

i quote:

Should you feel that after reading our policy enclosure the policy offered does not meet your needs, if you return your certificate or covernote to us for cancellation within the 14 day cooling off period afforded to you under the directive you will only incur a pro-rata charge for the days on cover".

so my pro-rata charge for the 2 days cover is £160 :(

looks like im staying with greenlight, but i feel like ive been let down big time in my 3rd year with them.

tell me about it. Ive still got her for another week! i might go and buy her back off the dealer yet! lol

Well I don't think I'll ever take out insurance with Greenlight if they charge you £80 a day if you cancel!!!

Pro-rata just means that you pay for how much (time) has passed. This should mean that you'd pay for 2 days subject to the rate at £750 per year...

so (750/365)*2 = £4.11

When I cancelled it was still in the 2 weeks and I did have to pay some but it wasnt anywhere near £160 and it was about a week and a half into the policy

i really dont want to cancel though, greenlight have always been good to me. What i want is for their rate to be competitive to all the other quotes ive got!

I was very disappointed with Greenlight, after all the talk on here of giving really good quotes they pretty much laughed at me when I told them what I'd been quoted on the 172 for my renewal and said they had no chance of beating it :(

they have?

Didn't you get new quotes before accepting their renewal? I'm going with admiral this time I think as with my exhaust they're quoting me £471 which is more than £100 cheaper than most companies have quoted, Greenlight came close using the dreaded Highway @ £525.

yes rory, i did shop around when they sent me the renewal and they were the cheapest for the 172 at £757 so i went with them again.

My problem however, is when i changed the policy to the 182 i bought yesterday. Everyone else was much cheaper for the 182 but greenlight's premium didnt drop accordingly.

I've phoned a few places tonight and just cant get a good quote. Someone even said 182's are hard to insure... lol pish!

I guess they're screwing you cause they know you don't have much alternative, see if Neil can help he is very good to be fair he has quoted me and offered me an alternative to Highway.

I can see myself calling Elephant and them beating my Admiral quote to get me to stay with them.

I'd like to get away from Elephant / Admiral one day though! (he says after 5 years with Elephant lol)
