Home networking help!

  VaVa
Right, I've fetched my old PC from my ma and pa's and connected it to my router.

I want to transfer some of the files on it to my new PC before I format the old one.

I can see/use the files on my old PC from my new one, but not the other way round.

The shared folders on my old PC show up in My Network Places on my new PC but when I try to open them I get

"SharedDocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin. of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Not enough server storage is a available to process this command"

Any ideas?!

Turn off the firewall on the new PC (control panel>security), it's likely it's blocking it. Or add your local network to the exclusions 192.168.1.X

You'll also need to share the folder in question on your new PC.

Not sure why I'm helping you mind given the last thing you did was call me a r****d...

Cheers for the help...... I guess I must be the r****d because I can't remember doing it. lol. Sorry.

Forgot to mention that firewalls are disabled on both PC's and the required folders have been shared.

Seems strange how it's working one way but not the other!

Ok.

Start>Run>cmd.exe

Type - ipconfig /all

Write down the IP's on both PC's:

e.g
192.168.1.1 - old
192.168.1.2 - new

Then from new PC try and ping old pc and vice versa

In the command prompt type:

ping 192.168.1.X

If you get a reply and they can see each other then that rules out firewall and other connectivity issues, let me know.

4 packets sent, 4 recieved. So I guess ping was Ok?

Both pooters are running XP (one is MCE but that shouldn't make any odds I don't think)

Is anything coming up in the event viewer.... Start -> Run -> eventvwr

Then check the times when you get the error message and post the details back in this thread

  VaVa
The errors I get don't seem to show up in the event viewer?!

last logged event was like 17:38.... I've just tried to access the shared docs twice but it doesn't show up.

Are you checking under all three tabs, i.e System, Security and Applications

Is this sorted now mate? Went out and got wrecked last night so only just come back on CS

  VaVa
No mate.

I can do what I want to do by sending the req. files from my old PC into the shared folder of my new one.

Just seems so odd that it doesn't work the other way!!!
