Home - Servers

Anyone run a dedicated server at home?

I'm tempted to get one, starting with the simple things such as file and print sharing, then maybe moving on to CCTV management, FTP, X10 appliance management etc

Anyone run one at the moment and what do you use it for?

For the record I'm not interested in streaming films etc

Should I go for a proper server or make use of some pieces of hardware that may be coming out of my PC soon (4GB 1066Mhz, Q6600 Quad-Core)?

Yars. I've run most Windoze servers from home, not running anything at the mo as I haven't got the space

I used proper server kit though that was going spare from work, not a home PC, but I'd have thought your Q6600 machine would suffice for what you need it to do.. tbh it'd be overkill :p

I run Hyper-V virtual servers at home running windows 2008 servers and exchange etc. OTT indeed but hey why not.

I've already got a 'play' server at the moment but a fairly lowly spec:

AMD Sempron 2800+ (Don't Ask!)
2GB
1 x 120GB, 1 x 160GB

I've got Home server on it but I'm finding it too restrictive for what I want, so I'm thinking of upgrading and going with Server 2008. I can't be arsed with Virutal.

The problem with full blown server is it doesn't stream with xbox natively unlike XP/vista/7/home server.
