Well I already had a power boost valve IMHO not the greatest mod in the world for a standard-ish car, but bloody handy when youre running gas. I have a fuel pressure gauge tapped into the side of mine so I can alter fuel pressure according to ambient temperature; that way I get a consistent correct AFR from the gas which obviously varies pressure according to the bottle temperature.
My system is set up like this: AFR gauge to keep an eye on the ratio; fuel pressure gauge to allow accurate adjustments whenever necessary (the chip takes care of the normal fuelling of the engine); nitrous pressure gauge so I can keep an eye on pressure and expected nitrous delivery rate; progressive controller set up at 50bhp-100bhp with a rise time of 2.5 seconds.
I can do a normal 5000rpm standing start, feeding the power out carefully then as soon as Ive got traction in the first second and the revs are holding at 5000, floor it and the gas fires at 50bhp, change up and floor it straight away where the controller resets back to 50 again, keep it floored, by the time Im at around 7000 revs, the gas is at full power 100bhp, then if I need to change up again, it resets to 50hp at around 5500 revs.
This is the system that enabled me to keep up with an RB5 even though I had a bent driveshaft and a gearbox full of shredded bearings! As Ive said on another thread somewhere, you should aim for as much power as your car can take, not necessarily a numerical figure of 100 hp. If youve been driving your 16v long enough, you can feel when its right and when its struggling. Eg over in France I had the 100 jets on but without the controller cos I hadnt wired it up yet. Under street-racing conditions where I was firing the system at 100hp at around 3-4000 revs (earlier than usual to compensate for not being able to use it at all lower down), it was very quick but I could feel that that amount of power in a single sudden hit was killing the engine or at least the drivetrain. I wouldnt be confident about putting anything over 100hp jets on it, my feeling is that thats about the limit, with a controller. If you want more, its time to think about an engine rebuild, lower compression etc.
