How much to fit a clutch?

  Trophy 373
Since i bought my clio mk2 1.4 the clutch has become significantly stiffer. When i took it to my local renault garage i was told i need a new clutch and was quoted £860 fully fitted, is this a normal kinda price as the clutch itself is only about £140 list price ?

You shoulnd't need a new clutch just a new cable there about £15. Then its about 0.5~1hour to fit. you can do it youself if yo realy want.

Clutch are good for 100k on them at least even with serious abuse.

Fiitment is about 5 hours then a new clutch is £100 or so.

Go to a clutch specialist if you want one fitting but I'd say 99.9999% sure if just the cable which needs changing.

I have read a number of other threads about the cable being the problem and assumed that to be what it was but the renault mechanic said the diaphragm springs had become stiff and nothing was wrong with the cable.

When pressing down the clutch pedal it is very hard to push down and then when released will spring back very fast, i assumed if it was the cable it would be stiff/slow on release aswell.

I must admit i know little to nothing about clutches and any further explanations of what to look for would be very helpful, and is the £760 correct for the labour involved in replacing the clutch?

No, as I said £100 for the clutch or so and its about 5 hours labour and depends where you are how much that works out as.
Mr Clutch etc specialists would charge about £200 or so cash in hand maybe £250 with a VAT reciept. excluding parts (I'd personaly get the parts youself from Renault). Then idealy get some decient new fluid in there so £40 or so.

Change the cable first anyway, because if your chnaging the clutch might as well change the cable and two its much cheaper than a new clutch.

My first clutch went after 36k after that I got an LUK clutch which is on about 90k now and still isn't slipping.
For the clutch to be changed I paid £300 and it was done in just under 3 hours. Renault are always going to be dearer.

Soudns like typical garage trying to get your money. Do what Edde says first. May make a difference may not. But its a darn sight cheaper than £840 (which sounds a ridiculous amount imo).

mine went couple yrs back in a mk1 1.4, only had 50,000 on clock but release bearing was fucked, cost, £300 had all belts done too, flushed rad, new oil in both sump and gear box, was a peach after that!

I paid £91 delivered from GSF for my Valeo clutch. It cost me £270 to have it fitted by a local private Subaru guy. Every garage I asked quoted me 7-8 hours labour! This seems ball-park if it's their first cs clutch fit!

7.1 hours is the book figure to do them.
