how not to change down





I did something similar in my first car - a Renault 11 GTX 1.7 - I came over the brow of a hill going far too fast and then realised there were traffic lights for roadworks and a huge line of cars in front of me with no room to stop in time. Without thinking I dropped into second from 5th (doing about 90) and dropped the clutch. Bits of engine went through the bonnet but I have never stopped so fast in my life. I stopped with literally inches to spare but it saved my life.

I will never forget the guy in the car in front looking in his rear view mirror with very wide eyes expecting me to plough into the back of him :eek:

I once did redline in 4th, missed 5th and hit 3rd on one of my old cars...

Luckily all it did was snap the fan belt! :oops:

ive done this twice: once whilst racing a Fiat coupe 20v turbo we were both pretty even (in the wet so wheelspin) upto 80-90 when i went for 4th and selected 2nd! ouch! the revs have never jumped so quickly, right over 8k rpm and i stamp on the clutch "VrrrrrrOOOOOooooOOOOM!!!" , needless to say i stopped racing.

Second was racing a ren 19 16v, coming past easily up a hill in 3rd at 80-90 select 4th and go into 2nd!!! big noise again, clutch in, select 4th and still toast him !! haha. Spoke to the guy afterwards and he said he heard it! That poor engine of mine has taken some real abuse and still runs very well.

You may think that your car stopped faster due to your downshift, but any modern car has brakes that are more than up to the task and would have stopped you just a quickly without the damage. The limiting factor is the mechanical grip and friction between you tyres and the road.

Engine braking really does not contribute any meaningful stopping power in these circumstance.
