How often....

Can you detail a car?
I.e. Machine polish and cut into the paint?

I did mine at the start of June and I'm getting ready to give it a polish/wax again, but there are still a few light swirls and RDS that I haven't got rid of.
I wouldn't mind getting rid of them all but don't want to do any damage to the paint.

Any advice would be great! :)

How long is a piece of string?

No, but on a serious note, purely depends on your paint depth - hence the use of PDGauges.

I use to cut my paint back at the start of Summer, ready for show season with something like Menz IP, then keep on top of them with Lime Prime during the year.

Like JD said, if they are very light, just use a filler. You'll be hard pressed to fill RDS, but if you have the thickness to play with, its fine to machine twice a year.

Lol. Sorry, I mean a pre-wax cleaner with micro-abrasives, suitable for removing very light swirling and offering a slight fill for RDS.

Is that better :rasp:

edit - unless you meant lite.......

Ha, smart arse ;)

Yeah as Markie has said, do it properly once a year, then either fill or minor correct when you feel it needs it. Or major correct it 75 times a year if you have VAG/BMW paint ;)

Cheers mate. Just something I've been working on for a while now. Wanted to keep everything..."under the radar" as I didn't fancy infractions for advertising etc.

(lol at the lack of swear filter!!! edit-edit - I see its working now)

Can you machine polish it more often, but just polishing it, rather than cutting into the paint??

Also, what's the best way to get rid of polish on the plastics???

Polish is cutting the paint ;)

And WD40, a microfibre cloth and elbow grease. Rub in and around hard to allow the WD40 to react with the polish. Then buff off and protect with a plastics product of your choice.

Can I still do it just every couple of months then? Otherwise, how else can I keep it well polished and waxed??

Well i do mine once a year, a few weeks ago i did mine. Its fine until winter, which is when it starts to get marring and swirls because i cba to wash it properly in 0 deg temps. I went over it with Power finish this year as its the first polish its had since November when i got it from the dealers. there was a bit of paint damage, next year i should be able to go round it with a rotary and Lime prime.

You shouldn't to keep it well polished, just waxed + protected. Polishing is there to remove scratches and contaminants. If you wash it using a decent technique and keep the paint sealed, you avoid these two.

Polish it properly, then seal and/or wax it and it won't need doing for a good 6-12 months.

I would suggest 90-100% correction once a year in summer.

If you half do it to remove some of the swirls and no deep scratches do it twice if required.

As JD said if you follow the procedures for washing without inflicting more damage your paint will survive a lot longer and not need polished every 3 months due to bad washing technique.***

***My own car is in a bad way swirls wise! Lols!

Well the wax on mine is starting to wear off... It's been on a couple of months, but when I detailed it, I only had the chance/energy to put one layer of wax on.

What would you recommend I do then? Just wash as usual, clay and then wax? Or polish it again before waxing?
(swirls aren't a problem atm, not really got many of them)

Just wax. You won't need to polish or clay. And on a side note, polishing should always follow clay. So foam-rinse-wash-rinse-dry-clay-wash-rinse-dry-polish-seal-wax.

Thanks, I'll whack another few layers of wax on then... Saves me a he'll of a lot of time lol ;) I was preparing myself to do the whole damn thing again!!!
Cheers mate.

I always re polish (or in my case apply HD Cleanse) again just to be thorough when re applying wax.

What wax are you using?

Yeah! £££'s worth!

Get something solid and durable for the worse of the weather. The fk1000p is highly recomended for bodywork durability and even whack some Dodo over the top no harm done.

Should it have been High?

When am I booked in forearms! :(

edit; but does depend on paint thickness, hence the use of a guage.

1000P doesn't touch Collinite for durability, so if you want the best winter protection get Collinite 476S and slap it on top of Carlack 68NSC (CYC does a kit!)

As for correction, if you know how to wash a car, you should only need to go over it with a finishing polish 1/2 times per year after it's been properly corrected. Or buy Silver.

JD - why dry before claying? Waste of energy that ;)

476 looks like s**t on black cars though.
