I’m back, 182 In RB This Time

  RB 182
I’ve had 7 Clios over the last 12 years, starting with a 51 Black 172, 02 Flame Red 172, an 04 Silver 182, 2010 200 CUP, 2001 Sunflower Yellow 172, 2004 Storm Grey (repainted) 172, and a 2003 Silver 172, which I sold in 2017. I said that would be my last one.

That was until the other week, when @Stuflac asked me to help him find a RB 182. eBay searches were set, and both me and him checked daily for cars, with lots considered but never followed up on. He finally bought one on NYD, with me driving it back to his house for him. The RS Clios are like a drug, you get clean, then if you drive one again, it’s like you’ve relapsed!!

It could be said I’m handy with a spanner, working in the trade and also doing the belts on at least 2 of my previous 172s. So my search was for a RS that needed work, and it had to be RB.

Fast forward to last week, this car came up fitting the bill. A message to the seller and a price was agreed. I arranged transport and the car was delivered yesterday. If ever I buy a car unseen, I presume the worst, and anything more is a bonus

It was bought with no belt history (in fact no history at all), a slipping clutch and a broken spring. It also features gangsta tints all round, which made the cabin so dark! It was misfiring slightly upon delivery, a quick scan showed injector 2

The plan is so try and get it minted back up. There’s not many of these RB 182s left, and I think a nice standard car will hold its money. The engine will be coming out, to replace the clutch and do the belts, along with rectifying any leaks (there aren’t any on 1st glance, even has an under tray on!). The gangstas have already gone, was quite satisfying ripping the film off!

So, I’ll try and update this as I go on...

So not much progress, removed dash top and the speedo to see why no engine management light, praying they’d not damaged the LED. Thankfully just put some foam in the hole, so removed that, plugged it back in and it wasn’t even on anyway!

Been sorting my garage ready to pull the engine, and finally go it in yesterday. Ni real progress until the weekend, but a few shots of how it stands

You’ll see both front springs were totally broken, the OS one had actually split down the coil which I’ve never seen

So the engines out, wasn’t too bad tbh, I bought myself a new jack, a decent low entry Halfords Professional one, and this really helped with getting the height to make it comfortable working underneath. Previous engine changes, the DS3 HDi I did last time particularly, were a nightmare to wriggle under!

I’ve figured out along the way that this car is quite original, I’ve owned lots of RS Clios, this is the first one I’ve had that has still got a complete undertray on, along with the little things like the starter heatshield is still intact and the small fabric/foam noise insulation type parts are all still there

I removed it from the top, which is the best way imo, it needed some manoeuvring to get the gearbox to clear, but got there in the end!

And here’s what faced me. Lots of grime, but I’m not sure there is an oil leak, I think it’s just 13 years of not being able to hit the hole ? I removed the gearbox, and got it onto my engine stand. The clutch was worn out, and it doesn’t look like that auxiliary belt has been done in a long time, can’t wait to see the cam Belt!

After being away all week training with work, finally had a few hours stripping the engine. Some of that time was spent getting the drivers window up using a power probe, so I could push the car outside as the Mrs is complaining her car is frozen up all the time!

First thing I noticed is there was a lot of lose bolts! Finally got to inspect the timing belt - yep, that is 2009! So, a 10 years old timing belt, tensioner, and also the water pump was dated 09, so presumably the aux set up is 10 years old too! Also noted was the something nobody wants to see on a F4R - tippex! On the rebuild I’ll be using the correct tools (which I’m still to acquire, as annoyingly I sold my last set - if anyone knows of any for sale, please let me know)

As my battery went just after this point I’ve only a few more photos. The car has had 2 new injectors around 18 months ago, and currently has an dud injector on cylinder 2. What’s going on with that injector in the photo? Why is one totally different from the other 3?!

Finally for this update, some opinions
My plan for this car is to do the work required, then probably run it for a short period, but the end goal is sell it on. What are people’s opinion on painting the engine block after cleaning? Would a good coat of black suit, or just leave it? Paint the brackets etc?

Update on this

Stripped the engine ready for the clean up. 1st thing to do was the cam belt, as I’d rented the tools. Timed it up correctly, and I think going off the previous tipped timing marks, it was a tooth out?

New genuine cambelt kit, and dephaser installed, all correctly timed and torques using the proper tools

Also replaced the auxiliary belt kit, again genuine with a new genuine water pump

I ended up wire wheeling the block to get rid of surface corrosion, then rattle canned it with heat resistant metal paint. Looks loads better, it’s not going to win a concours competition but it’ll do!

Then set about rebuilding, replacing all gaskets with new genuine, cleaning where needed, and replacing things like the PAS switch which was leaking

One of the reasons I took the engine out, was to do the clutch. I think I struck lucky because my parts supplier supplied me a clutch a lot cheaper than everywhere else. When I came to fit it, it was wrong. They replaced it with a Valeo 3 piece kit for no additional cost as it was their mistake. The old clutch was well worn. I also refaced the flywheel, and it made sense to replace the clutch cable whilst there was room!

I got the gearbox back on (with a bad back and fighting the engine crane) and bolted it all up, sorted the loom and was really pleased. I decided to have a sweep up, so moved the crane to find this on the floor...

Yep, the release bearing had popped off the arm and dropped out! b*****d! So, box back off, bearing on, and repeat the above!

Last night, I spent an evening in the garage, and got the thing back in. It went in a lot easier than it came out for some reason. After filling the gearbox with fresh oil, filling the cooling system with fresh genuine coolant, and filling the engine with 5/40 Mobil oil, I cranked the engine, always the most nerve racking part! She fired up. Abit spluttery, but at least it ran! I think I’ve swapped the wrong injector (2 was faulty, I think I’ve replaced 3) so I’m expecting it to misfire a it when warm. I couldn’t run it for too long, as the driveshafts weren’t in the hubs due to waiting on shocks, so had to have clutch in constantly to stop shafts turning, but tomorrow I’ll put the struts on and then hopefully get her out the garage!

Other things I’ve done whilst the engine was out, is replace all dash bulbs and remove the carpets to clean

Cracking thread this. Eacctly the type of thread i love to follow!

Interesting seeing the evolution of the 1*2’s through the years. A few years back i saw them being grabbed up by the hooligans wanting to chav them out, and lately im seeing a lot of threads like this where they are being de-tacked and put back to standard condition! Which is great to see ??
