im a student, but like no other....... i have money........ but not for long ....... i want to buy a system for my clio but am confused what to buy and why ........ ive seen some deals like sony 12 subs for £50 and boxed for £70, but the sub is 1200w and all the amps that can power 1200w seem to be hundereds of pounds....... then i saw that amps have channels, so if i get a 2 channel amp do i only need a 600w amp..... or am i in the wrong area...... some one who knows about fitting a system would help be great.......

if u want something basic 1 12" sub and an amp to run it then go for a
12" JL W0 for £100 with a JBL 2 channel 200 amp for bout £80

stay away fom sony - full stop - .
Stay away from any amp that read off in max power - good guide is look at fuse rating , if its a 1200w amp with a 20amp fuse - its not going to give out as much as say anm amp made by alpine, mac, jl, rockford(the older ones) rating say 200rms
Good subs could be a Resonant engineering(sp) SE 10" or 12"
jl subs are quite good
but it really depends on budjet and what music you listen to.
try also to stay away from any active subs - eg vibe - not great vaule for money.
Give us an budget and we can work out a nice sounding system for the price. Each channel basically means one speaker. So a two channel amp can do two speakers (i.e. left and right). A four channel amp will do 4 speakers (i.e. front left, front right, rear left, rear right). Sometimes you can bridge channels, which basically means you can join them together for one channel with [usually about] twice the power. So you might have a four channel amp that gives 100W per channel (i.e. 4 x 100W). You could bridge two channels and keep the other two as normal. This way, you could have a front left channel, a front right channel, and a bridged channel (from the remaining two channels) and use the bridged channel for a sub. Youd do that because subs usually need more power so by bridging two of the amps channels youve created one larger channel of around 200W. You can have pretty much any combination but this would be the best for a cheaper system. Run two front channels (L and R) off a 4 channel amp, run a sub off the amp (by bridging the other two channels) and either ignore rear fill or otherwise running the rear speakers straight off the head unit.
Yeah, you need to look at RMS ratings. I reckon Infinity stuff is fantastic value for money. Sony stuff by and large is not so good. You dont need to match them, though, as long as youre not going to go crazy with the volume. You dont need a 600W amp to power a 600W sub. You can run it with lower power, but just make sure you dont turn it up until it distorts, or youll blow either the amp or the sub or both. I was running an Infinity Kappa sub from a bridged clarion amp (4x50W) for a while (back when I had bugger all to spend on audio gear) and it sounded fine for a budget system.
Anyhow, if you want some ideas of what kind of system you could get, i.e. the best sounding system for the money, write back with a budget and well see what we can do!

Do people just spraff out stuff cause they heard someone else say it. ? there is nothing wrong with the sony stuff.
If you want to enter an SPL comp, then sony probably isnt the choice to go for, otherwise they make good quality sh*t. Anyone that just blatently says sony is sh*t is lying, sony stuff is good and great sound quality can be achieved, just not compitition level.

Thats just it I am one of those people that has very good hearing when it comes to these things, I notice quality differences that other people dont.
Sonys are not as bad as everyone makes out, for the price vs. quality sony is top of their legue, ofcourse speding 100s more is gonna yeild higher quality. I have owned both, and yes the alpine did sound richer, but not enough to justify the money i outlaid on it.
I dont agree that sony has a poor sound but their units do seem to add a lot to the music being played..as where when u listen to a alpine deck for example u pretty much hear it as it was meant to be reproduced. A sony deck will colour the music and add more bass and treble but not always more mid frequences. However this is not always a bad thing.
One thing sony do suffer with however is build quality. I work for ripspeed as a specialist and the no. of units we have back from customers who have purchased sony is unbelievable. However its worth bearing in mind the younger teenage market tends to be its main customer and they really abuse their kit sometimes and expect performance from outside of what they have spent. Sony are their own worst enemy sometimes by quotin rediculious power figures for their products
I was thinking of properly building my iCE install in the next few months (when the weather inporves as i have to work on my drive), was thinking of getting maybe a 4 x 100W amp and a 10" sub, was gonna power my 80W RMS (330W max) 6x9s and then a sub, obvously the sub would only be about 400W. What are good makes to get, bear in mind i wanna keep it as chaeap as pos with out loosing too much quality, wa thinking about £200 tops.
Also was thinking of getting some components to run off the HU (4x50W), do most installs ive seen the crossovers have been mounted in the boot, but that is a hell of alot of cabling to run fron the HU to the crossovers and back again. Was wondering of anyone else had comonents where they have mounted the crossovers. Also recomendations for the components (prolly about 5.25"), again dont really want to spend much over £80ish.
PS. Sorry for hi-jacking the thread, but hopefully this question (and any answers) will help you wiht your problem too.
my m8 has a full Sony setup in his Saxo, and i must admit it kicks out some proper quality!
However, i do find the speakers (coaxials, 6x9s) sometimes do tend to be a bit tinny for my liking...personal opinion i suppose.
Im running mostly Vibe in mine and am very impressed with it all. the subs are mega powerful, infact most people need to get out of the car when i turn them up. lol.
Im just n the middle of re-doing my whole set-up at the mo, so it will now be setup with the following:
Panasonic MP3 head unit 4x54w
Vibe 5.25" Component Coaxial Speakers (2 sets)
Rocky Fosgate 4" Coaxials
Vibe SR 6x9s
Vibe VP3 Amp
Vibe monoblock 4 Amp (brand new one)

sh*t loads of the highest quality cabling
The only thing is, its not really a budget system, that lot has cost me the wrong side of £1500, ah well...its all worth it if u like your tunes.
All will be installed in a mega custom build, and of course, pics will be shown as soon as its done
