How are people managing such crap mpg figures? Are you in constant stop start traffic? Or slow moving?

Exactly this

Ive had two 197's. My first was an early 06 plate and that averaged 28 ish. Current Cup with the slightly longer 5th/6th sees around 30. People say its shocking, but its no different to say an EP3

I know what you mean but because the 1*2's are so frugle for what they offer, they are being used as a comparisson.

They probably aren't that bad in the grand scheme of things.

My old 197 cup averaged 27mpg whereas my old 182 managed 35! Quite a difference when there is no real noticeable performance gain.

Keep the 172.

Regarding the fuel debate. i have 2 good pals who have 197's. one travels 5/6 miles to work then the same journy back (30% town and 70% a roads) and is averaging 24mpg.

the other tootles around town and is on 22-23mpg.

 !!

I would love a MkIII sport to but then I look at the repair bills for them and think Fek No! MkII maybe getting on a bit now but they're cheap to repair in comparison.

Steering pivot bushes seem to be the things that I'm seeing wear now and they aren't fun to replace.

I think you'll miss the flamer, but I'm a little biased ;) You'll miss it even more so when you detail mine in January like we discussed :)

The red 197 posted above does look nice though. Good luck with the sale Dawn!

I will miss the flamer, been my second favourite car owned easily. She may not even sell, so we'll see!

What is the tax 6/12 months? And whats the cambelt intervals on them? :)

Belts are a bit higher on the Clio III RS... The book states 6yr intervals but most still recommend 5yrs/72k

I was under the impression it was 6 years on the 200. My 197 definately states 5 years in the handbook.

Same engine and belt run but you're proberbly right saying Renault changed it on the 200's rather than the 197's

My 200, I managed 419 miles to a tank.

My commute to work in the 172 I was averaging 38
My commute to work in the 200 I average 35-36

So it really does go down to how the car is used.

The car Is no worse than a civic type R and equivalent.
actually, my friend only manages 320 miles to a tank, so a type R Is worse!?
A corsa vxr is worse on fuel than the 200 too. My brother has one.

The whole 'm3 returns better mpg', is just ridiculous. Massive exaggeration.
I can believe it with the people who are in stop start traffic, but any car is rubbish on petrol then.

Either your a tight git OR your use to diesel mpg.

Ive done 11,000 miles in 6 months in the 200, so i think my opinion counts. not once have i thought the 172 is noticeably better. It's not, for me.
peoples commutes differ, so will the mpg.

Driven on a run, they're good cars.

Get UR - best colour out there IMO, Get on a set of springs to lower and job done, Don't put spacers on tho, i much prefer the look without them.

Love my 200, but in my oppinion the fuel econamy is very bad for the B road driving I do. I don't rush it that often to be honest, Can't say I've seen more than 30 out of it. I reckon I would if I reset the trip & then did solely motorways.

Ive never seen less than 21mpg and that was on a blast around north Wales... Occasionally seen 40 in steady traffic on a motorway

Well from mine doing the commute I used to get around 28-30 that included nailing it up hill the hills on cold starts to feed into traffic, stop start, and nailing it down the bypass, 1/2 a tank lasted me 2 weeks. So will get around the same return.
Managed 38 on my slow run back from Plymouth, not going to fast cruise at 65. That also included a few spurts to overtake some trucks, and for fun, so they are possible to get decent ish mpg.

You have obviously decided that you want one, just comes down to how much you want to spend, and whether it is worth the 197 or 200.
decsions decisions

Guys going to look at a nimbus 197 cup sunday. 56 plate, 76k on tbe clock. Dealer.

Av price for this? What to look for? The cambelt has been done

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Engines are no worry with mileages, so seeing as its had its belt done I should think you have no worries there providing it pulls cleanly and no knocks or rattles or smoke etc.

Gearboxes can pack up, but with how you drive if it feels good when you testdrive it and goes into gears ok then it will probably never have a problem as you are so gentle.

Bottom ball joints like to go wrong, and are expensive fix, unless you can jack it up to check for play, or get it on a shaker plate at an MOT station there isnt really any easy to check condition, other than the steering should have no play in it and no knocks or bangs when you rock it side to side when the car is stationary.

I'm sure you know how to look at the paint and interior etc, lol

That won't be a cup on a 56 plate mate. Cups weren't out until late 2007/early 2008? Link to said car?

I like the look better than the wheels looking like they sit out far to much and can still throw it round corners without worrying if my wheels will be destroying the arches lol, Don't get me wrong, the back of yours looks nice but its the fronts that i think are erm..........Wrong lol - But each to their own - and besides, we have the best colour anyway ;)
