Congrats on the youngen!

If im reading this right then you have a 172, a 182, and your missus has a car? Why not sell all three and get a mk5 golf or something along those lines?

Surely you need to think about money to look after the baby? Not to run several cars....

Just re-read now realise the 182 is your OH car? Still sell both imo

if your gonna step up because of size you need to step up alot eg octavia, passat, bora? although mate has polo gttdi got quite abit of room cheap to tax and insure brilliant once remapped and not bad boot space plenty bigger than a clio you wouldnt realise, pick one up 3000 now so give your OH your one and sell hers to get the polo. safe as f**k too

This has been bugging me all day...

Do what I did. Family car for the wife to drive, you keep the toy.

So, sell her 182, buy a 'normal' family car for her to clatter about in, and back the f**k up away from the 172. Its done nothing wrong, so to sell it would be like disgarding a puppy.

if she doesnt want to drive a big car let her have the clio (that way you get to drive it still) and get a bigger car using the money from the ly clio.

Get a v6 clio and put the baby under the bonnet like clarkson did in the topgear review.

Joking aside keep the clio! there's plenty of fantastic < £1000 family cars in the trader.

Goodluck with the baby dude, im going for one next year! :D babies ftw.

Lol some interesting, varying opinions here, seriously thank you to all, its great knowing all your opinions :)

I think i need to do some research into what i could get if i kept the Clio, any ideas? Im thinking something like mk3 Golf, cheap parts FTW

If you're OCD with having a clean car, don't get something to cherish because the interior has a high probability of getting trashed. Whatever car you get, consider it as a "workhorse" motor. I guarantee at some point, though not necessarily all at the same time but theres a high chance that it will, you will get food on and in the cracks of the seats, there'll be sick to contend with, sand, mud and crud, sweet wrappers, raisens and sultanas, carrier bags, stains of unknown origins, greasy finger marks on the glass, foot prints on the back of the front seats and odd smells, etc etc and most of the rubbish it will accumulate under the font passenger seats and in the boot. So that Octavia VRs for example with white carpets and white panels in the seats, don't count on it staying white for long!

Why not just keep the clio and sack the idea of a bigger car?

I'm with gally on this, people seem to think having kids is the end of their motoring fun, I have 2 kids (8 and 2) and i went from a 3 door clio to a 3 door golf, my missus is expecting again and i have no plans to change my car.

When you go out with the missus and kid why will your mates have to tag along?

Whn i had my first kid i went and bought a 4 door car, within a week i regretted it, within 6 months he was no longer in the big pram and boot space wasn't an issue, strapping a kid into a 3 door car is much easier with a seat that moves forward allowing you to also get in rather than standing side on in all kinds of awkward positions doing the same in a 4 door.

i havent read the full thread as there is some HUGE posts in there, but if it hasnt already been mentioned......

Sell the ly 182, give your clio to your partner to use and you still get to drive it, use the money off the ly 182 and get a relatively new, safe, smart family car for you to use and to be able to take your child round in

Congratulations as well :)

Get a cheap focus or something along them lines,

Im gonna be a first time dad mid December too (Dec 17th due date) so like a plum when i found out she was pregnant i ditched my 182 and got my 197 in the thinking it's a bigger car what not... Couldn't have been more wrong pmsl, Was in Mothercare last week trialing out some buggies what have you and all i could fit in comfortably was a push chair ffs... Buggies are no go without stripping the rear of the car out and like you i'm moving to Wales so will be coming back and forth pretty much every week.. The 197 is staying but im gonna buy a cheaper but bigger car

The first 3 years is gonna be tough on space until the kid moves to a group 3 car seat. Group 1 rear facing and group 2 front facing kids seats take up a lot of room, more so in a 3 door car and if you're tall. I have a Clio and a Ford CMax, and for sure getting kids in and out with a car fitted with Grp1 or grp2 seats is a lot easier in the CMax and the tall roof line helps a lot as the kids can walk through the car with ease. Especially useful when the car is parked up on a road and you need to get the kids out on the pavement side.
